    Router cutters

This is the best review of router cutters I've seen- but unfortunately US-centric - still may be a useful read if you have a subscription. I'd concur with the comments on Wealden though. Also Perform are pretty good and can be cheaper. Cheers Gidon [Edit - no that's not the review I meant -...

    Axminster videos , up market

Yes the timber should pass under the BRIDGE guard for face planing! Very surprised Axminster would show an incorrect and possibly dangerous way to use the machine. Only when edge jointing do you have the guard the way it's shown for obvious reasons - and then only a small amount of the blade is...

Sharpening under the microscope - lots of gear compared ...

Ivan - I use this pocket microscope to have a close look at the edge :): Bugbear - might be something to try - thanks. I'm sure I could improve on those pics - but they are good enough to see roughly what's going on. I can probably see more clearly and certainly quickly looking through the...

UKWorkshop getting on the YouTube bandwagon?

Resurrecting an old thread - I have a new video up on: Freehand grinding and honing (Note Youtube are finally adding some improvements and this vid is available in standard and high quality :).) Please feel free to contribute vids to this thread - if you need any help in how to go about it...

Axminster offer - stonking deal on JET Grinder!

Thanks Jake - yep same as my 2" - thanks for confirming this. Still tempted by the 3" with an upcoming trip to the US! The flatness problem is true of all the Spyderco stones except the Ultra Fines which are surface ground to +/- 0.002" so I'm told. Cheers Gidon

SCMS's - Not built for accuracy?

Axminster offer - stonking deal on JET Grinder!

Jake - how do the 2 compare - are they the same except for the size? I have the 2" one which is OK but I had to spend some time removing the surface grinding marks. I think I read somewhere that the 3" has a finer surface grind and no visible marks? (They show up as swirls of black as soon as...

SCMS's - Not built for accuracy?

Olly - I think you're far better off doing as you are doing - finishing off with a shooting board. I've never been happy with mitres directly off my table saw or mitre saw (I have the Bosch 10 SD). It's fine for rougher work but not for really tight mitres in my opinion - even with a good fine...

Sharpening under the microscope - lots of gear compared ...

Added another pic to first post - results off 0.5 micron microfinishing film (as shown in my vid here). This method is hard to beat - you get an incredible edge very quickly that needs no (further) stropping. But you need microfinishing film which isn't that easy / cheap to come by. (I get mine...

Sharpening under the microscope - lots of gear compared ...

Thanks chaps. Bob - I took the BIC as a reference shot - if you look at the Brent Beach site I linked to he discussed this - he suggests BIC must use a sub-micron abrasive of some sort. The scratch pattern is beyond the capabilities of the QX5 at least. Rob - yes mine is deglazed - I use an...

Sharpening under the microscope - lots of gear compared ...

Thanks Paul - absolutely agree - it's finding a system that works best for you - the tricky bit (for me at least) is sticking with it! Cheers Gidon

Sharpening under the microscope - lots of gear compared ...

I couldn't resist an Digital Blue QX5 microscope on Ebay for comparing sharpening methods. It works to around 200x magnification. It's a toy really but gives passable results - although you need to employ additional lighting for the 200x magnification. I have tried this before but with a more...

    Some advice on sharpening please

I agree with what's been said - it's very difficult to recommend sharpening kit - everyone has their chosen method and often their chosen method tends to change! If you're happy with diamond stones I would recommend getting some decent ones that should last you. I have some 2 sided DMT Duosharp...

Christoph, Can't you build a top - I made a top for my bought sandpit - it came with a fitted plastic cover but it was next to useless? Cheers Gidon

    Laptop recommendations

Why do people with Macs want everyone else in the world to have a Mac? Very bizarre - it's not like Apple are a struggling not-for-profit company and a worthy cause to support and promote? They are just another electronics giant like Sony, Panasonic etc. Surely one chooses a laptop or desktop on...
