DC's ruler trick with a LV MKII honing guide ...

Thanks Pete. Paul - yes it's only chisels that I have a problem with clamping in the LV - and even then it's not all chisels. Don't know the DC modification to the eclipse guide - have heard it mentioned - is it in one of his books? I have the first two - will maybe take a look. Cheers Gidon

    Removing bench grinder wheel covers

I'm not quite sure why you need to remove the guards - here's my tool rest - you don't get a lot simpler: Nicked from Lee's sharpening book - except ran out of time - it should be able to slide back and forth against some outside pieces of wood - hence the slot in the middle. If you make...

DC's ruler trick with a LV MKII honing guide ...

Thanks Paul - yep steeper back bevels possible too but not experimented much with that. Rob - yes the Eclipse guide is a handy little thing - still find the clamping mechanism on the LV is far from perfect - starting to hone with the chisel or (less frequently) the plane blade askew is very...

DC's ruler trick with a LV MKII honing guide ...

Wizer The only purpose of the ruler trick is to ensure the area just behind the blade is polished and that any minute burr is removed. Will work on any plane blade but shouldn't be used for chisels where you want the back perfectly flat to register your cut. Cheers Gidon

DC's ruler trick with a LV MKII honing guide ...

Karl's post on back bevels has prompted to post my solution for applying DC's ruler trick with a plane blade without taking it out of the honing guide: The guide simply pivots on the back of the honing guide and the small back bevel is dictated by the extension of the blade and the height of...

Best place to buy Mitre T Track and Laminate for Work Top?

Fireback stuff has been popular only recently - mainly because people have trouble getting hold of laminate sheets. But it's really not so difficult - I got a roll years ago (10'x4') from Jewsons delivered - still have plenty left and didn't cost the earth. T-track - yep I'd go for Woodworker's...

UKWorkshop getting on the YouTube bandwagon?

Hi JS Very glad you enjoyed the videos and even got something from them! It's definately easier not grinding right to the edge of the chisel - the honed edge makes it easy to check progress and there's less risk of burning the tip. Cheers Gidon

Hacked Off Rant/ HDD v Mini DV

Smudger The camcorder market is a nightmare at the moment - it's very difficult making a choice on a format! High Def or Standard Def, MiniDV, DVD, HDD, Solid State!!! The MiniDV format is great quality and designed for editing in anything. The other mediums generally use some more severe...

    greenie for Axminster

Thats good DW - but I find them hit and miss - sometimes it's next day, sometimes it's not - UKW member or not! In fact if I really want next day delivery I've taken to paying for the higher cost option - which they still make clear doesn't guarantee next day (but always has been for me)...

UKWorkshop getting on the YouTube bandwagon?

Wizer I used and still occasionally use an extra coarse DMT stone for grinding back the bevel - you're right it's quick enough a lot of the time. If you don't let the secondary bevel get too big and you don't use the chisels for opening paint pots (;)) it's very manageable on a coarse bench...

UKWorkshop getting on the YouTube bandwagon?

Hi Dave Thanks for your comments! The easiest way is not to grind all the way to the edge of the tool - and use the honed metal as your guide for a square edge - so keep checking and adjust where you apply pressure accordingly. It's easier than it sounds if you give a go - just use a light...
