    glue hassle

I think a possible explanation is that the wood absorbs some of the moisture in the glue and thus swells a little whilst the outside face of the wood remains dry. The very slight bowing or movement forces the joint apart, the glue hardens and then prevents the wood from moving back when it has...

    Yandles this weekend

Bugbear, yes you are correct. I discovered that when I got home and do mention it in my write up here http://www.aldel.co.uk/Yandles08.htm. David's version is much simpler though, hand held and wooden. Probably different enough to avoid any legal problems. A bit like all the other dovetail...

    Yandles this weekend

Hi all, I too had a good day out but felt visitor numbers were a little down compared to other times. I only bought some Abranet sanding gauze to try out and a little pot of polyurethane glue. Wanted a fancy coping saw frame as seen on David Barron's stand and didn't realise that Classic hand...

    Router Boss

Popular Woodworking have made a short video at the IWF Atlanta show of Lewis Stepp and his Router Boss being demontrated. Sure to produce discussion and comparisons with the WoodRat it can produce the same results but by following different methods. It is more highly engineered however and...

    WoodRat For Sale

I really do not need three WoodRats!! I am offering one for sale. It is The new type channel with the extra T-slots etc. It is the one that I reviewed on my WoodRat site. http:www.aldel.co.uk/Reviews10.htm . The only use has been for reviewing and some parts like the plate and router plate...

WoodRat versus the new Router Boss

Ok I'll hold my hand up. I initially thought the brush was a poor idea but it works very well indeed. Well spotted Dave! Some time ago I noticed the drawing was "wrong", However I did not notice that the middle pins were recessed so the picture does make sense even though the pin board should...

WoodRat versus the new Router Boss

This morning I noticed that Henry's remarks on the WoodRat forum have been edited again!! I have now had time to fully investigate the proposed engineering of the Router Boss and although at first glance it may have some passing resemblance to the WoodRat, it is in fact different in every way...

WoodRat versus the new Router Boss

Hi folks, I don't know if there are still any WoodRat users amongst the members here now but I thought you may like to know about a new competitor that will soon be available. The Router Boss from the Craftsman Gallery looks like it will address all the little problems that the WoodRat had and...

    A PhillyPlane review

Having just passed one of those big "o" birthdays I was by chance lucky to receive a rather pretty little thing from Phil Edwards. Especially designed and made for me from Pao Rosa by our very own Philly. Phil has kindly given this plane to me and I have rather naughtily looked the gift horse...

Workshop Footings - Is this gravel?

What you have is a concrete mix sometimes called "3/4 to dust". Bagged in the correct proportions for general work.Try a 6 to 1 of cement and mix well. Saves the trouble of purchasing sand and chippings seperately. For a super strong mix add a little more cement. but don't make too wet. Aldel

Would you believe I have got another lemon

DW Pleased to see you are keeping the saw. Do not use anything containing silicones on the table. If you do you will get unexpected! results with the finish on your work. Aldel

Machining aluminium on the Rat and an over-the-top stop

Good idea Tony,.... yet another 'Rat mod. I have used milling cutters occasionally on my machines. In theory not needed for alloy but I use a spray duck oil onto the bit end. Cuts even better and stops the swarf flying every where. That system is really helpful if you make super small...

    Feedback on website revision

Hi LN, Thanks for the info. Seems like I am a complete maverick and breaking every rule in the book! Fortunately it is not a commercial site nor am I trying to draw in random visitors. I am noting your tips and will ensure that I will follow them for the final rebuild. My first job is to...

    Feedback on website revision

Hi folks, A little bit cheeky perhaps but I wonder if you could spare some time and visit my 'Rat site and give me some feedback on any bugs that need fixing. For the new web compliance I have had to embark on the tedious job of moving away from FrontPage extensions and remove and revise...

    Do you strop?

I have been advocating this method for three years now since I bought the same leather and polishing compound. I bought an extra leather and use a coarser compound as well. The dark grey/black stuff for the first hone. The leather strips are glued to some 18mm MDF. I use my Veritas honing guide...

Would you believe I have got another lemon

Oh come on DW!!! So much fuss! :D You want a zero clearance a plate and you have one. The gap on the other side of the blade is needed for tilting. Why make another when the first is OK. If you think it is too tight to the blade then file a little off. 5 mins at the most. A replacement can't...
