Thanks Sandyn, although I’m not sure it’s the same Smith & Edwards, the dividers look to be @ lot older than mid century.

    Lathe purchase ideas...

Exciting weekend ahead for you :) I bought my Herald since 2017 and have no cause to have second thoughts, very good build quality, smooth and easy to use, and, if you need it, the customer support I found to be ‘old school’ by which I mean, first class.

Vintage Dividers - does anyone know this maker Maker Smith & Edwards ?

These dividers have cleaned up nicely, pleasant surprise to find the copper fitting under all dust. The stamp possibly says Smith & Edward (s) ? A search online drew a blank, anyone have any information on the maker, and intended use, drafting, maps, carpentry?

    Antique saw advice

Not sure if you planned to removed the handle, however, if the handle is fitted with split type saw nuts, I would not try to remove them, even if you can remove them, the brass threads strip easily and the threads seldom tighten back up again.

Tiny wooden plane, but what’s it task?

Thanks everyone, all useful information. They look very similar to the images from Droog, thanks, so fine joinery of some sort. I was in two minds as to whether they were manufactured or artisan made, be interesting to see the Nurse catalogue mentioned. The toe is unfortunately is cracked, but...

    Junk experiment

Hi Adam, I like it, when I saw your first image I though hmmm, not sure if I’d turn that on my lathe, but the finished bowl has turned out way better than I would have expected.

Tiny wooden plane, but what’s it task?

A small 4” plane, unusual design so it must have had a particular task in mind. Small rebate was initial thought, but the sole is slightly convex, so not sure. The cutter is also thickly tapered for such a small plane. Assume is likely artisan made, certainly has some good age and is a...

French Import Duties on UK Tools & Machinery ?

IOSS - my understanding is that the IOSS system is for order values of < €150.00. Below this value, retailer collects tax/duties payable to pass to local tax authority. If it’s above €150.00, then any tax/duties due will be requested and have to be paid before delivery is made. €150 threshold...

    Stanley 4 1/2 Type 6/7 ?

So, I’ve finally got around to sorting some planes, they’ve all been stored under wax paper type coverings, so relatively free of corrosion, first one out was a Stanley No 10 Carriage plane, just required a brush off and light clean. The next is this Stanley 4 1/2. I believe it’s a type 7...

    Stanley Combination No 45 - Trade45Mark

Is there any relevance to a US made Stanley No 45 plane with a casting mark ‘trade45mark’ ? Am assuming it was just a mark used at some point in its history.

    Chuck removal

This washer issue comes up often with turners, some swear put helps, others that it causes problems. As Dalboy says, if the chuck is not tightened, a tiny amount of slack often results in it becoming very tight once lathe is on, so I now always cinch up tight by hand. That said, in the past I’ve...

    Engineering Tools Maybe ?

Hi Dizjasta, Unfortunately not, was amongst items in one of my fathers tool chests, and unlikely that the gauge has been missed. One of those thing, but at least I know what it is for, mystery solved, thanks. May leave it on a shelf and let people try and work it out, although it’s specialist...
