Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Hi Adam, yep, have been for a while, a couple but in the US, which will be pricey once import duties and admin is added. If I keep it, then may be tempted with a new cutter, Toolnut can supply one, prob Ray Iles also, however I note that they are thicker, so not sure how the fit would be on...

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Will seem like a schoolboy error for some on the forum…usual suspects, however, I’ve just realised the 5 1/2 cutter width was a 2.1/4” up until late 1930s ish. Can source a new replacement, also have a suitable Record cutter, however an original Stanley would be preferable, but probably like...

Bench Drill Opinions (SIP, or Bosch PBD40 - not vintage)

I bought the Record Power DP25B drill, had it a few months and can’t really fault it. Runs super quiet, very sturdy on the bench, particularly rate the depth stop system on the cast iron wheel, huge improvement over what my old drill provided. I am a fan of Record Power kit, build quality is...

    Record Power

Wanting to share the excellent service I’ve again received from Record Power, maybe anyone weighing up different options when choosing kit to purchase, this will be useful. I’ve recently purchased my fourth Record Power machine, which had a small fault caused in transit (damaged plug, no big...

    Woodturning Advice

Agree with what’s been said already, all good advice, especially with some tuition and safety equipment - full face protection masks readily available, new eyes not so. I returned to turning after nearly 35 years, acquired an vintage record bench top lathe and an Axi starter set of chisels, so...

    Elliott Lucas ‘ESSO’ Pliers

All sounds very plausible, I’ve a few old GPO and arrow marked tools, always super quality. These Esso marked ones were just not something I’d not come across before. Thanks for the interesting links.

    Elliott Lucas ‘ESSO’ Pliers

Hi Andy, am good thx, you too I trust. That’s a good spot, I’d not considered that, I think your correct, looking at the ESSO mark again, it does appear to have been stamped over the original EL stamp. An Esso promotion or similar maybe.

    Elliott Lucas ‘ESSO’ Pliers

EL pliers commonly found, but I’ve not seen any marked ESSO before, assuming the petroleum company, has anyone come across any also ?

Old catalogue from John Hall Tools online

This vice was my fathers, it’s been hidden away for years, but I was pleasantly surprised to see this post, thanks Andy and all for the info. Its priced at £2.70 so I guess its what…towards the end of the companies history. I don’t ever remember seeing it, my father had a couple of bench vices...

    Chisel Sweep Charts

Is there such a chart for carpentry gouges to distinguish the sweep in the same way that there are charts for carving gouges?

    Record Power excellent service

I purchased a RP lathe back in 2017, which has been excellent in use. One of the small additional tools went missing, most likely it fell on the floor and I swept it up…doh. Anyway, I contacted RP to purchase a replacement, and pleasantly surprised that before I could enquire to cost, I was...

Mystery Tools Hardware - including Brades & Vaughan, but what were they for?

These have all resided in tin box for as long as I can remember in my fathers garage. One or two possible garden tools, couple look blacksmith made, but apart from that, no idea of use?

    Old Woodies with social history.

Sharing a couple of old woodies, nothing that special in themselves, however they have evidence a interesting part of Britain’s turn of the century social history. Both originally belonged to the Holborn Union Workhouse, which came about from years of amalgamation and collaboration of south...
