    Table/rip saw. Advice please!

If you are building kitchen units you will probably need to break down 8 x 4 sheets of whatever sheet stock you choose, whether it is melamine faced chipboard, veneered MDF or whatever. A small, lightweight table saw isn't the best tool for that job and an 8 ft rip needs more like 20 ft of clear...

    A shaving set stand

Pekka, my Dad was a shepherd and he used to make crooks out of Scottish blackface rams horn. He used to carve everything from leaping trout to thistles and even border collies on the decorative ones. The smell when the horn is worked is one that, while not a pleasant one, will always remind me...

    Ratchet screwdriver...

I know it's not a ratchet but I mounted a hex shank magnetic bit holder into an old screwdriver handle after seeing a very pricey LN offering. I have to say it is my single most used (and useful) hand tool that will take all the rogular screwdriver bits as well as hex bits, torx bits, security...

floatglass as a surface plate thickness?

You'd be using a relatively short piece of glass and, yes it will bend but by so little that it won't have a detrimental effect on your sharpening/lapping. In my early working life I was a histology technician and part of the job was to sharpen microtome knives (used for cutting 3 to 5 micron...

    blasphemous thought on japanese chisels

Do you know if the socket taper is the same on your Japanese chisels and the LN ones? I assume that you don't have a lathe to turn your own.

    Bevel Box Battery/ies

Funny you should say that the bevel box runs through batteries even when it is switched off. I bought a digital angle finder from Lee valley Tools, like this onefrom Axminster. Every time I want to use it the battery is dead. I now have to take the battery out when not using it (most of the time).

    New Yankee Workshop

A couple of episodes from the 2007 season were shown on 'shed' last night (ones I hadn't seen before too). Sky+ is a great thing...I get to watch some of the shows I like rather than Eastenders, I'm a celebrity etc.

    router for table use

I have a Trend T11 in my router table. Great piece of kit that allows bit height adjustment from above or below the table. It seems to realy have jumped in price recently. I got mine 6 months ago for about £230, they are closer to £330 now.

    Kitchen worktop jig material?

The really cheap ones are melamine-faced MDF and probably best avoided.

    Pillar Drill Table.

There is a video on Stu's shed that shows a useful looking drill press table.

    F clamps

Too late now, but I bought a set of the Axi ones on offer (with wall rack) and so far I'm well pleased with them...so much better than the Quick clamps I bought them to replace, and just about as easy to use. One question I have, looking at Axi pricing and also at the Silverline ones Bob has...

    Copy of the Record 311

According to the most recent Axminster flyer to drop through my door, They (Axminster) are buying these planes in and doing the grinding and polishing in their own workshop.

    laminate on Birch ply ?

My router table top is B&Q birch ply, which I laminated on both sides with "Formica" laminate. I used Evo-Stick contact cement to attach the laminate. Four years on and still no problems. I reckon a router table top gets a lot more wear than the average desk so you should have no problems with...

    Cutting a clean circular groove?

Hi Graham, I don't understand when you say circular groove...your drawing looks more like a blind hole. If you give us a bit more detail about what you want to do, we will have a better chance of helping.

    Sending wooden box to Australia

I've just come to Australia from Scotland to work for a couple of months and I can tell that Aussie customs are indeed very sensitive about any plant or animal material being imported into the country. A finished wooden item should be fine but you must declare what it is on the customs form or...

    floating cabinet panels

I've made frame and panel doors in MDF in a similar way. I used 18 mm MDF for the frame and 6 mm for the panel. I used the same 6 mm MDF for the loose tenons as I didn't fancy cutting tenons in MDF. As said above, once the router table with slot cutter is set up it is so easy to run all the...

    Thicknesser (SOLD) and Planer (SOLD)

Thanks Peter, for both your opinions of the machines and about how noisy they are. I too live in a fairly typical residential area, so the noise is something to bear in mind. Having said that, I am getting so little workshop time at the moment that the neighbours would have very little to...

    Thicknesser (SOLD) and Planer (SOLD)

Peter, it's a pity you are so far away from me. The set up you are selling is just the combination I have been thinking about getting for my single garage/workshop. Care to share your reasons for changing?

    Another plane ID question......

For all the Stanley Bailey info you ever wanted, and probably a lot you didn't, have a look at [urlhttp://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html]Patrick's Blood and Gore[/url] website. If you want to do a refurb, there are quite a few posts on the forum about de-rusting and plane fettling on...
