    SCMS - Help

You have to ask yourself how often you really need the crosscutting capacity of a slider? If you only need it rarely you might be better getting a non-sliding CMS. My local B&Q recently had the Dewalt 703 for £169...I bought one and I'm impressed with the accuracy and repeatability of cuts I can...

    Making saw-handles.

Thanks guys, I'll order the hardware and wait for the tuit to arrive.

    Making saw-handles.

I have a rather unlovely old S&J tenon saw with a loose handle that I'd like to fix up. The handle appears to be riveted on and I don't see an easy (non destructive) way to get it off. Any ideas? If/when I make a new handle, what is the best way to attach it?...I see what looks like brass...

Axminster Slide mitre saw (250mm) 240V

You want a multi-material blade for plastics ali section etc. Basically any good triple chip blade with 80t or so should do the job. I know you need to use a blade lubricant for cutting metal but I don't know about plastics. The blade speed on the saw will be fixed but on a slider you can adjust...

I think it sucks! I'll get me coat

    bench build

The bench looks great, well done and a pretty good price too. My only comment would be on the use of biscuits to join the under frame together. It will be interesting to see how well biscuited joints stand up to the forces generated in the bench by hand planing. I like biscuit joints, they are...

    10" SIP Sliding mitre saw

To be honest, I've mostly done this on washing machine motors where there is usually enough space to get access to the commutator with the emery paper wraped over the end of my finger. Hold the emery paper against the surface and turn the moter by hand; it usually only takes a few turns. You...

    10" SIP Sliding mitre saw

When replacing carbon brushes, especially badly worn ones, it is a good idea to "dress" the commutator (the segmented ring that the brushes contact) with a fine emery paper. If the commutator is rough it will wear the new brushes very quickly.

    New Plane

Nice work Roy. Great to make something so useful. What is the knurled brass knob at the front for.

Will it guess what your thinking in 20 questions

I won with plane (woodworking obviously).

    screwdrivers

I have to admit that the LN one was my inspiration but being a tight fisted Scot I balked at the £33 asking price. I had all the bits to hand and it was so easy to make. I have to admit it is just about the only hand screwdriver I use now, unless I need something really big.

Triton purchase - what to get?!?

I'll try and get the camera out at the weekend and see if I can sort out posting pictures.

    Straightedge Clamps

I have both Trend and Progrip and on balance I prefer the Progrip. It is a little bit heavier than the trend and I've never had a problem with it slipping, or the Trend either for that matter. You can also get accessories like feather boards and length stops, also back to back adaptors so you...

Triton purchase - what to get?!?

I started out to make a sled that runs against the outside edges of the table, like the one in the picture, until I cut myself on the unguarded blade. When I got home from A&E I converted my design to run on the sliding table rail. All I needes was a set of plastic bearings, available as spare...

Triton purchase - what to get?!?

The height winder kit is the best addition to the WC2000 by far, closely followed by the dustbag. I would also add the dust bucket, as it will collect from the overhead guard or even from hand held power tools. I also bought the Maxi sliding table (cheapish on Ebay). I don't use the full sliding...

    Plane Iron Salvage

I don't know if the cap iron screw threads were ever standard but if you use the iron in a scrub plane you won't need a cap iron anyway.

    Anyon want-

I like the handle shape, but what is the tool?

    screwdrivers

I had an odd wooden handle lying around and I set a magnetic bit holder in it (the kind designed for drill/drivers). I now have a compact magnetic screwdriver with as many tips as I have bits in my toolbox...Philips, Pozi, straight, torx, square drive and they are instantly replacable.

Make your own grinder from an old hard drive

It's worth stripping old HDDs for the rare earth magnets out of the voice coil. So useful for all sorts of things in the workshop.

    Cutting cornice for kitchen cabinets

The ability to "creep up" on a line with a power mitre saw makes it a must for this job. My local B&Q still have the DW 703 for £169...great value for money.
