    how

I have never steamed pine but being a soft wood I would imagine it would be okay, the thicker the timber the longer it needs steaming but again, I can give no time for this but would say half an hour in the steamer should be about right. Be nice to see how you get on.

    how

I go along with Steve. I did boat building for many years and quite often we would steam timbers in a pipe of water and then they would bend very easily to the contour of the boat. It does not work with all types of timber. If I were to make that sign today I would make a former, like a wooden...

new life for an old bed

Well done Mark, what a great use for an old bed and a profitable one at that.

    Any ideas

The wood is 3/4 inch oak and when finished will be dipped in finishing oil and 24 hours later waxed polished. While I was at the craft fair today I had an idea and that was to mix some scroll saw saw dust with some glue and some red paint. When its dry I will sand it smooth. I shall try this on...

    Any ideas

I have a pattern that I would like to cut but there is a small problem. There are several internal cut outs, which is not a problem, but with two of the small cut outs I would like to fill them with something that is bright red. The pattern would not be the same without the red bits. Obviously...

    oh nooooo

I have never made anything as time consuming as Grahams wonderful chess board set but if I did I feel it would be close to £200 if I sold it. A friend of mine makes traditional Welsh dressers and they are a work of art. He had a lady come to his workshop and she asked him to make her one. He...

    Do you really need one

I bought my Hegner footswitch with the saw and had an amazing deal. My saw can be working 8 hours a day and for me a foot swotch is essential. It is so much easier to work, especially when there are lots of internal cuts. I would think as a habbyist having a foot switch is not so important but I...

    Thanks to all..

Steve. The rubber mat question was posted on here some time ago, some said it did nothing, while others, including me, said it was beneficial. Some one mentioned how many engines have rubber dampeners to reduce vibration. As you have probably found out, you will get vibration if the saw is not...

so what am i doing wrong??

Steve. I endorse everything that has been said. The Hegner is unlike any other saw and as a result it will take some getting used to but once mastered it is a joy to use. You will get used to slotting the lower clamp in at the cporrect angle without even thinking about it. There is a hole in the...

    Ugh! Crap plywood

I had a thought. Very close to where I live is a company called, Swansea Timber and plywood Co Ltd, they are one of the main importers of baltic birch plywood. When I need some I pop down to their shop and one of the guys there will cut it up for me so I can get it in the car. I am sure they do...

    Scroll saws

If I were to design a scroll saw I would have a 22 inch throat. The table would be thick solid cast iron, it would be 3 times the size of the hegner table. There would be no inserts, just a small fore and aft slot for the blade. The table would be rigidly fixed at a true 90 degrees to the blade...

    Ugh! Crap plywood

Birch ply is by far the best. As Bryan said, it is expensive but when you have it you also have peace of mind that when you make that first cut with several hundred to follow its going to be okay and if there is a probelm it will be one the operator created rather than the fault of the plywood...

    glasses

In 25 years I have never worn safety glasses for scroll sawing. The highest a piece of sawdust flies up from the blade is about 4 inches. I have never had a piece of blade break and fly up either and I mast have used thousands of blades in that time. I do however wear my ordinery glasses when I...

    Ordering the saw this morning..

Steve, you will need some 3 in 1 oil. Where the arms are bolted to the frame you will need to oil the bearings either side of each arm. Just 2 drops is enough at each point every couple of days or so.

    horses

Steve. Glad you got the horses okay. I thought I would mention after reading your reply to Bryan. You must be in the same boat as me now. I am working up to 16 hours a day just trying to keep up, its not just the craft fairs but orders I get from facebook and by other means as well. I cut 1000...

    Career Advice

The post office will taking onextra people soon, its not a bad job and quite well paoid. Better than walking the streets. Joking apart it would seem your best bet is to look locally for any work, not having a driving licence is a huge obstacle, how about a bike, second hand ones are quite cheap...

    Musical leaf

Another quality product from Martin's saw. Now that is a good exercise in scroll saw work and if anyone can cut that as good as you Martin then they have reached the standard required and the world is now their oyster. Well done, 10 out of 10.

    Payment for wood

Very nice Bryan, as usual your work is just amazing, the detail and the proportions are spot on and I bet you really enjoyed making that. Its always nice to give things to people as a way of saying thankyou and for me its is the look on their faces as you give them what you have made that really...

    Newbie questions

Glad to hear you are enjoying. Those guys you see on you tube have been doing it for quite a while now. Its not going to happen over night, it takes lots and lots of practice but you are doing everything right, you realised there was a problem and you corrected it. You should not need a lot of...
