    Blades again

Hi Maurice. Almost everyone that is new to scroll sawing will break blades on a regular basis. It's part of the learning curve. There are a few reasons why the blades are breaking. One is over tightening of the blade clamps, another is pushing the wood to hard. When you have the correct blade...

    Scroll Saw PROBLEM

From what little information is available and no photos it's a difficult one as Martin said. I think the likely solution is as Bodgerbaz stated in his post. Paul, if you could post a photo it would greatly help us to help you. I can understand how frustrating this problem is and I hope you get...

    Needed a simple idea

I have a box of plate stands. I use them at craft fairs for displaying plaques etc.

drill /drivers and their demise or revival

I have a small Dewalt drill/driver I have had for about 18 years now, it is no where as good as it was when new and if I need to use it I need to charge one of the batteries first as they no longer hold there charge for long. It is so handy though. I may still be able to get new batteries for...

    Wood finishing for newbies

WOOD FINISHING. One of the biggest problems we scrollers face when we have made something is what finish to apply. A finish can make or break an item we have lovingly spent a couple of hours making and it’s true what most people say, always try a finish on an off cut first if your not sure how...

    Skirting (again, sorry)

I would skirt the bay like this. Say the skirting is 6 inches wide. Lay a piece flat on the floor butted up to the first part of the bay and draw a line with a pencil along the outside edge. Then do the same with the rest of the bay. Where the lines disect draw a line to the point on the wall...

    Thank you Hegner!

Hi Keith. I use microsoft word for most of my name signs using word art and it's also good for plaques as well with several shapes available. You can also drag in other things from other programs and size them accordingly.

    Women drivers

I do a fair bit of driving and now and again I get so mad at women drivers I encounter. It's not that I am ever in a rush but what infuriates me is when I come to a junction and I want to turn right as I did this morning. A car is appraoching from my left and indicating it's going to turn right...

    Wood for newbies. A guide.

I have put together a little article on the different materials that could be used for scroll saw work. It is aimed at those new to scrolling and I hope it is of some help. Wood for Scrollers. The best wood for many projects is undoubtedly hardwood while other projects are best done in plywood...

    wee thank you gifts

Very nice work Gill, the recipients will be over the moon with those. You are a brilliant scroller with a keen eye for detail, well done.

    Problem with fuzzies

Hi Martin. I go along with Steve. It is almost certainly damp which is causing the problem. You could try pushing the wood a little slower but in your shoes I would leave it in the house overnight to dry out and then cut it. I know you are working in the garage and your saw is single speed. I...

    erm - HELP!

I have the same problem from time to time. The only solution I have found is the same as already mentioned, more pressure but I tend to take it slower and find this helps reduce the "bounce". I get there in the end although not a pleasant experience but I hate to waste expensive hardwood.

    BIG THANKS TO CHIPPYGEOFF

Thank's Brendan. It was very nice of you to post such a nice comment. I have just got back from a craft fair and it went well. We had a new lady today selling hand painted pottery, which was very nice and she and I sort of hit it off together straight away, love at first sight sort of...

    His and hers keys.

That is brilliant Martin. I would love to make some of those. Any chance you could let me have the pattern. That Russian site certainly comes up with the goods time and time again.

    Ripped off

Roger. Yes, glasses are vitally important, especially as you get older. I was just using the smart phone as a comparison, you get a lot more value from a smart phone than a pair of glasses financially. Martin. Yes, I did go to specsavers, it's the only opticians in town. I never thought of...

    Ripped off

When it comes to buying a new piece of kit I am staggered at how much money I have to part with and it's got to the stage now that I will only buy if it's absolutely essential. The cost of a new Hegner is a prime example and I was wondering what the actual cost of making one would work out at...

    Down - but not out

Sorry to hear of your dismal day Gill. It does happen though and we are powerless on the day. In hindsight you may like to do what I do if I am invited to a new craft fair. I go and make a visit before the day and can usually judge the potential and if it is worth my while going. I have just...

Paints for finishing Scroll Saw projects?

I use acrylic paints from Hobbies. When I make things from birch ply I give them two coats. There is no need for any sort of sealer. It is important to leave a gap of 24 hours between coats and then you will get a more professional finish. I also use spray paints, the sort that are used for car...

    What tools would you prioritise?

There is not an easy answer as there are so many tools and machines available to aid the scroller but as Cowboy said, it all depends on what type of project you will concentrate on. I have a belt/disc sander and could not be without it but as your space is limited I would go for a random orbital...

    Some advice please

Some years ago I used a public toilet in Gibraltar and there was a sign on the door which said. Please do not throw matches down the toilet as the crabs here pole vault.
