Advice for chisels 2nd fix joinery

Well the handles are Hornbeam (aka ironwood) so I imagine they'll hold up quite well. If you have access to a lathe you could always re-profile it for a top ring. Then you'll have the perfect solution.

Table saw - combination blade or separate rip/xcut?

I use a 48T 315mm as a combi in the table. However, I've slowly set in to the habit of crosscutting 95% of stuff on the SCMS with an 80T 250mm high angle blade for melamine. A 28T rip lives almost permanently in the table. A combi blade is crap when you want to do a long rip session, and...

Advice for chisels 2nd fix joinery

Sorbys are RC 60-61 hardness, but of 01 steel (like AI's), whereas LN's are A2 cryo'd I believe. In theory A2 cryo steel should improve edge retention particularly at low bevel angles e.g. for paring. However, 01 steel requires less effort to sharpen due to lower toughness. Jap chisels...

Advice for chisels 2nd fix joinery

Tony wrote: Lord Nibbo wote: I have the AI's. I suggested Sorby 167 rather than AI as I can't countenance bolloxing the AI's with a hammer. Regardless of the price they are bloody nice chisels too!. A superfine diamond plate in the toolbag is all I need. I can keep my tatty old Footprint...

Advice for chisels 2nd fix joinery

If you are not going to use a mallet, you are limited to plastic or hooped handles. Which rules out many really good quality chisels, which is what you want. So it boils down to high quality chisels with plastic/rubber handles or hooped handles...hhhm. :? You're not making it easy are...

    Router: 1/4 or 1/2

For dovetailing, definitely a 1/2" router with an 8mm collet option. The 8mm shank cutters are much better than 1/4". Many 1/2" routers are powerful (1850W or more) Fine for some jobs but to heavy/bulky for others including dovetailing. There is a smallish choice of mid-powered 1/2" routers...

Table Saw with no power lead - and odd connection

Dave, It is designed for portability and sitework hence it is very unlikely to require a 16A supply. With an 1800W motor it'll run off a 13A outlet. Its the bigger kit that needs a 16A supply (such as my own Scheppach machines with 2.8kW and 2.8kW motors respectively). It has the larger...

    American power tools...

I've had electrickery shocks. 110V is unpleasant to say the least. 240V is a real b*****d! Fatal? - well I guess I was lucky on all occasions!

Disaster with a trend diamond stone

I'l bet a pound to a penny that most problems with continuous diamond stones are simply due to clogging. At worst, some fluid and a wire brush will 'bring it back'. It's true that the 'bedding in' is the removal of the uppermost part of the nickel matrix - it's expected. Anyone concerned with...

    Considering a new Router....

I don't recommend a T5 for a Leigh jig. It struggles badly on hardwoods. I now use a mid-powered router - the Bosch GMF1400CE for the Leigh. The T5 does all the light jobs - chanfers, inlays etc. Ike

    Choosing a thicknesser

Hi Ithium, Yes. No, I have assumed that a 300mm wide thicknesser won't have a 300mm thicknessing capacity. Typically, the maximum thicknessing capacity on a 260mm wide machine is around 180mm and on a 300mm wide machine, it is around 230mm or so. So in your example of 150mm x 300mm...

    Choosing a thicknesser

Ithium, It's most important to first obtain 2 adjacent sides perfectly straight and square. You have to do this on the planer table. This is why planers have longer tables than thicknessers - the longer the tables, the easier it is to plane a straight face. Plane one side of the timber...

    Price of mahogany

If they are real sleepers, they will categorically, 100% not be Mahogany. Someone, may be, or unknowingly through honest ignorance, lifting your leg. Most likely Jarrah or some similar gnarly tropical hardwood.

    Diamond Stones

I've never checked mine for flatness. Whether it's 5 ten-thousands of an inch out of flatness has no bearing whatsoever on sharpening a chisel or plane blade (A waterstone will be more out of flatness than that after a few strokes). It does a great job and that's all I need to know! What I...

could i build a workbench with only £300??

If you are not bothered about the 'look', regarding durability and use there's no advantage in using hardwood. A softwood frame with softwood top and a sacrificial top sheet of decent grade ply will see you out. Cost: Less than £100. My bench stats: 4ft x 2ft, legs 4" x 4"...

    Diamond Stones

Hi Joel, I can recommend the Ezelap 8" x 3"'s. I have the Fine and Superfine. They are very substantial based on 1/4" steel plate. No problems to date with their function although they do 'bed in' with the first few sharpenings. They also come with rather nice cowhide pouches. I can just...
