    grinder advice

Unless it is really, really bad wobble, I'd have thought trueing a whetstone with the diamond dresser should be quite quick to do. In my apprenticeship, I was taught always to dress a new grindstone. But this was more mainly so for high speed wheels where imbalance could cause premature...

    Computer Aided Design (CAD)

RHINOCEROS. It's a full featured NURBS modeller. It has a range of modelling functions that shame high end CAD packages, and in terms of what you can draw with it, it really is like having a Rolls Royce for the price of a Mini. Being 100% NURBS based geometry, you can work seamlessly (excuse...

    Brass Stillson

Why, when the fittings are brass? I've never used anything but a standard BOC steel cylinder wrench (with valve key). The modernday favoured material for spark resistant tools is aluminium bronze alloy, mainly because beryllium copper is exceptionally nasty stuff if the machining produces fine...

    FERM FZB-720 saw

Probably OK for that money. As long as you don't expect too much of it, you won't be disappointed. Ike

    Japanese Mortice Chisel bit

I have a Rexon clone machine (Woodcut Trading) which had the 3/4" bushi for Chiwainese chisels. I simply bored it out to 13/16" on a Myford - a 10 minute job at most. Far easier IMO to turn one bush than possibly several chisel shanks (which'll also be much tougher to machine). cheers, Ike

    planer thickness question

A light spray along the inside of the belt should help. I've found it useful stuff that does what it says on the tin. At least it might protect a new belt from premature slipping and wear. Another tip I can suggest is to roughen the contact area on the cutter spindle with some coarse abrasive...

    What would you pay for...

I'd suggest working out the volume and value it between half of mill price and what a salvage yard would pay for it (which IME won't be very much) - maybe then around 25% of mill price? Then compare that with what your conscience tells you is a fair donation to the good cause and adjust if...

    computer virus software advice sought

FWIW, DW, I took the plunge into broadband just a couple of weeks ago. It was completely painless and easy to set up. Cos the PC is used by the whole family though, I am concerned that running several free security softwares for various functions (e.g. AVG, Zonealarm Firewall, Spybot and...

    3/4" x 3/8" barstock

Martyn wrote, I bet they're metric sizes! I've passed it to the purchasing manager as he was looking bored ten minutes ago, anyway, they only allow grownups to have company credit cards! cheers, Ike

    planer thickness question

The drive belt has a relatively small contact area on the cutter block spindle, hence limited grip an that is probably causing the squeal (like you get sometimes with a car alternator or power steering pump) Only made worse by it starting to fray. If you fit a new belt, I can suggest some of this

    0844 numbers

If I was sick, the last thing I'd worry about would be calling my doctor on an 08xx number. Now if it was an 09xx number, I'm sure that could make you sick - financially speaking  :) Ike

    3/4" x 3/8" barstock

Chris, Alf, Thank you both kindly!. Chronos minimum order is 15 squid, so I'll try FES. Martyn2, I need it for a assembly fixture I'm designing at work, but essentially it's for a slide guide using the track from Axminster. cheers! Ike
