Hi Jim, Welcome to the forum. I know you're looking for new but you might want to check this out first for-sale-axminster-bandsaw-t54367.html I have no interest in this - just saw your thread and then this a couple minutes later. Good luck.

    How much Shellac?

Hi Mick, Jim, I made up a batch of sanding sealer and a couple of batches of Garnett shellac and then spoke to the clients who live in South Africa. They don't want me to out any finish on until they arrive here from SA, which is next Friday. So at the moment I haven't got any pics to show...

    Restoring cast iron P/T beds.

Hi everyone, I have considered a permanent fix or even just buying another bed and replacing it, but I'm worried that I may not get it back together with the same accuracy I have now if I take it apart!! I'll try the filing and waxing first and if that doesn't work I'll consider all of the...

    Restoring cast iron P/T beds.

Hi Steve, I had a feeling you might reply - I know you've got the same PT. Ithink I may have done the damage when I did a bit of skip planing with unplaned wood. So my own fault, and lesson learnt. You'd use a flat file rather than sandpaper?

    Restoring cast iron P/T beds.

Hi Jim, Mines a Kity 1637 but I'm sure you're right - it may well be aliminum the same as yours. I have cleaned it and sprayed it with a silicon spray which helps smooth things for a short while, but the aliminum is getting so rough now I really have to rub it down. But without the right...

    Restoring cast iron P/T beds.

Hi everyone, The thicknesser bed on my Kity PT is cast iron with a black coating over the cast which reduces friction ( a bit like teflon). However the coating is coming off the centre of the bed which is now very rough and creating gouges in my wood. I would like to sand it and recoat it. Is...

    Straight edge accuracy?

Thanks guys, some nice comments there. I'm glad others have found the thread useful. It's been a frustrating experience the last few days, but has Matthew pointed out, I've learnt a lot from it, and now have some dependable references for the future. I'm not obsessed with accuracy, I just want...

    Straight edge accuracy?

Hi again, Having done some more 'scientific' analyse of this this problem I have discovered to my embarassement that I don't really have a promblem(other than impulsiveness probably!). My earlier 'tests' were done by putting the SE on the plane sole and then holding it up to the light. I could...

    Straight edge accuracy?

OK So I've just been out to the workshop and checked the SE against my planner outfed table and couldn't even slip a .0015" feeler guage underneath! So firstly apologies to Axminster as the SE probably is flat. Secondly Jacob asked if I checked the soles for flatness first. I did but not with...

    Straight edge accuracy?

This is getting quite frustrating. I'm not getting the accuracy in my woodwork and want to improve. So when I read someone like David Charlesworth telling me to flatten the soles of my planes for greater accuracy, and I follow his methods, and then get other forum members (who's opinions I...

    Straight edge accuracy?

I recently decided to flatten the soles of my planes has they’d never been done since I bought them. I put a piece of float glass on top of a ¾” Formica covered board and then glued the sandpaper and spent 3 days (on and off) trying to flatten the sole. I had marked the sole with a marker pen...

    Another 'fixings' question

Thanks XY and John. Yes you've got me on the right track now. I was thinking along different lines and never considered a gravity fed hinge. And the stays are a good idea too that I never considered. Good call thank you.

    Lime

Hi John, Lime wood has good acoustic properties and is used to make electric guitars. I know you're a bit of a rocker, so may be a project there for you

    Another 'fixings' question

Thanks for the reply Mark, but thanks to my terrible description you've got the wrong end of the stick! What I'm actually working on is a worktop, or section of worktop to be more precise, over a cooker. The worktop is hinged and when down will rest on two legs, when up the legs will swivel...
