The World Cup - Indifferenteers thread

Unfortunately, you could double that figure, to start with, and you'd probably still only be looking at the average wage of players sat on the England bench... :? :P I do still think we suffer from playing too many friendlies on home soil. We get to major competitions like this, in different...

    Planer Thicknesser

I agree about the noise but, sadly, there is no such thing as a "quiet" thicknesser at this end of the market, unless you get lucky and buy an old Multico or similar off eBay for a low price... Another option, if you had the space, would be to get a planer-thicknesser with an induction motor...

    Planer Knife setting Jigs

Don't buy them from Rutlands - the ones Axminster sell are much cheaper! I've had a pair for a couple of years but have never personally gotten on with them. Still, there are others who seem quite happy with them... :duno: :) Nice planer, by the way. I used to work with an old Griggio...

The World Cup - Indifferenteers thread

Rooney is simply one of the finest footballers England has at the moment - but, his personality doesn't come even remotely close to that. Remember the badge-kissing incident at Goodison Park a couple of years ago? The club he supported as a boy; the club that gave him his big break in to...

World Cup - Fans and fanatics thread.

Chris, I think 'utterly arrogant' (and stubborn) sums up Capello pretty darn well. But, I guess that's one of the problems with bringing in a manager with a huge reputation (and ego!) from overseas. In his opinion, we "need" his help... :P Yet, just like Eriksson, he has no experience of...

    Chunky TV Table

I like the packaging with the label on the side! 8) Definitely looks 'chunky' to me - is it as heavy as it looks? I might have put a wider lipping on the edge of the bottom shelf and also widened the bottom rail on the side panels just a bit, to keep it in tune with the 'chunky' theme. You...

    Side Table - Finished Photos

Hi Eoin, On this occasion, I didn't take any further precautions with the end-grain joints and, to be honest, I didn't even think about it... But, it does seem to hold very well indeed. If you do something similar yourself, you might find it easier to glue them up in pairs (side by...

    Side Table - Finished Photos

There's not a lot to understand, really! :D Obviously, measure the diagonals, first. If one is longer than the other (I wouldn't normally worry if it's less than 1mm difference between them), you want to place cramp across the diagonals of the longest dimension. Tightening this cramp will...

Resawing? - What, have you bought a bandsaw???

    Side Table - Finished Photos

Got a couple of glue-ups out of the way, this evening. First, "flattening" the undersides of the veneers with my belt sander: I was surprised by how strong the edge-joints felt, after a full twenty-four hours (...and a couple more). I wish I'd make a test piece now, so that I could try and...

Startrite 352 update: re-furb and first cuts!

Looks like you've done a great job, there! :) I'd try to keep the speed up as high as you can when cutting wood, even for very deep cuts. Slower speeds are generally only used for cutting non-ferrous metals and plastics, so they don't melt and bond themselves to the blade.

    Axminster TS-200?

If you can lock the sliding beam (to stop it from sliding) then, I'd assume you could use the slot in that, if you wanted to? I don't think Andy mentioned whether the table can be locked or not. I agree with your thoughts on the pricing but then, the question of space comes in to the equation... :)

    Side Table - Finished Photos

Got a bit more done this afternoon. Well, that was after gluing the legs on to the rest of the frame, last night. I left a couple of cramps on the slats, as they glue had only been given a few hours to cure (they all need twenty-four hours, really) and I didn't want to risk forcing the joints...

World Cup - Fans and fanatics thread.

Well, the overall standard of the opening games hasn't been great, has it? It's clear that the best is still yet to come from many other nations, besides our own. Germany were up against the very lacklustre Australian side, don't forget - whom started that match with a lone "makeshift" striker...

New Chestnut Products Finish - Special offer- Last Chance!!!

Hi Richard, Thanks again for alerting those of us who don't lurk in the turning forum...  If this stuff really is repellent to finger marks then, I might be placing an order at some point. How does the shine compare to Wood Wax 22, for example? I've always liked that one...

:D In case you haven't figured it out, that should have read M8 (damn brackets!).

    Side Table - Finished Photos

Picked this one up again yesterday but, with the Word Cup now under-way, I'm afraid to say that my progress has been "interrupted" somewhat... I can't say it's been entirely worth it, either- the quality of this first week's games, overall, hasn't been that impressive - I'd have been...

Which Jointer - LN 7 - 8 or Low Angle?

Another option, if you really need a longer plane but can't afford the £200+, would be to make one out of wood and just buy a nice thick blade... That's something I'm thinking about doing at some point.

Routing Aluminum - DIY T-Slot Track

I think they'd have to be pretty large magnets, to have any effect without sliding away as you pass the timber through... :? Steve M, though, used some (from a pair of speakers, I think?) for one of his table saw guards and, from the videos I've seen, it locks down very well. My only solution...

    Elektra Beckum Spindle Moulder TF100M

Just looked it up (here) and it should be enough to get you started for a few years. First thing I noticed is that it'll take a 160mm diameter block - is that enough for the tooling you'll need for your windows? I don't know enough about spindle moulder tooling... At least it's more than...
