    Bandsaw Spares

You could also try looking at the Bearing Boys website - they may have something suitable available. That's the good thing about bandsaws - there aren't many components that can break or go missing. And, if you do require spares, there's often something available from many sources that'll suit...

    Fisch Flexi Curve

I know that Tilgear do something similar (though, they're currently out of stock), as I've got one in my workshop at the moment (I'm borrowing it off someone else). I haven't had a chance to properly use it yet but, it does seem to be reliable once it's locked off. No springback, as far as I can...

    Router table build at last

That's an excellent idea, Chris! 8) I mitred the meeting ends of my fences to aid dust extraction and chip clearance but, using this to lock a sacrificial insert in place - brilliant!! :)

Past mistake = How Not to Load Timber In Your Car!!!

Thanks, Pete. I'll keep an eye out for something similar second-hand but otherwise, I think I'll have to look for an estate car, at least for the next couple of years. :( Insurance would only be between £400-600, which isn't too bad really (currently paying £300 on a sixteen-year old car with...

    Shiplap or FeatherEdge ?

On 125mm or 150mm boards, you'd normally allow for a 25mm overlap. Sometimes, because it's so thin, you can find that featheredge boards split as you nail in to them, particularly close to the ends of a board.

The never ending story part one (carcasses)

I don't think it would be too bad routing in this direction if you're only cutting a groove, where material is being removed equally all round the cutter (don't quote me on that!!). A set of hold-downs or featherboards make the operation much safer. But, if you look at the cutter from overhead...

Past mistake = How Not to Load Timber In Your Car!!!

Hi Pete, Just out of interest, what length can you get in the van with the passenger seat folded flat? I'm leaning towards a van at the moment, provided I can afford the insurance and tax. Oh, and did you get to Windebanks last week? Sorry, I forgot to ask you before.

    Draw for tool into bench

That's going to be some drawer with burr walnut veneer! 8) Sounds like you've already got the idea in your head. Only thing I can think to add would be to placing some kind of rubber or non-slip matting inside, to stop your tools from rolling around as you open and closer the drawer...

Past mistake = How Not to Load Timber In Your Car!!!

Another less in what not to do to your car... This was last Summer when I built myself a new workbench. I still don't know how the car made it back in one piece and it stopped complaining as soon as I took all the wood out! :D

The never ending story part one (carcasses)

Looking good so far. :) Only thing I might add is that your panels (being solid wood) will want to expand and contract (only by a small amount) with seasonal changes in the weather (and, even the move from your workshop to its resting place in your home). I'm a little concerned that the way in...

    Router table build at last

Looking good so far, Chris. :-) If you can find the right sort of cutter, I would consider routing T-slots in the backs of the sliding fences. You can then fit something as simple as a coach bolt, with a wing nut behind the fence to lock it off. It just seems like an efficient way to remove or...

    Bandsaw + blade perchase.

The advice you've received already is sound. I'll be the first to recommend the services of Ian John at Tuff Saws when you come to buy your first set of blades (always buy more than one, just in case!). Ian will also be able to advise you on the best blade(s) available in his range for...

    bandsaw.

There's a review of this machine on another site, here, which you may find helpful. Personally, if you're going to be cutting bowl blanks, I think you may be better off with a slightly bigger machine. Don't know what thicknesses you're expecting to cut but I wouldn't usually expect a machine of...

    hello all mortice machine clamp

If you find the hold-down grips too much, you could try putting a piece of paper in between the timber and the clamp as you set it. That might leave enough of a tolerance. After all, it's only there to stop the chisel from lifting the wood up with it. :-) Another thing that might help is to...

First machinery purchases - thoughts and advice please

I've been very happy with the Nilfisk vacuum I bought a while ago. I use it with all my power tools and some of my stationary machines that produce very fine dust (bandsaw, sanders, table saw). It's got a relatively low working noise - it's much quieter than the Record Power extractor I sold to...

It looks to me like the top of a PVA bottle or similar... I'm sure you could knock something like that together, if you wanted to save a few quid.

    biscuit joints

I agree with what Noel says and I have successfully biscuit-jointed hardwoods only 12mm thick without the aforementioned "telegraphing" effect. With pine or something softer (tulipwood, polar, lime) however, the results may vary slightly. With regards to the minimum width, that largely depends...

Woody Stuff in / Near Bristol

Sorry, Simon. I can't think of anything, either. Most of the yards will also be closed (though, they probably wouldn't let you look around, anyway... :P).

    Belt sander uses

Yep, same here, basically. I use my for initial sanding quite often, particularly where I might have a lot of material to remove... It'll get rid of any previous machining marks much faster than a decent random orbit sander. It is important to keep the tool moving and to sand parallel to the...
