    Workshop Revamp - WIP

Below, you can see the noggings all in position. Simple enough: Rather than trying to notch the blockings around the joists bolted to the truss frame, I ripped down a wider nogging on my bandsaw and fixed one below and beside the old 4x2in. Granted, I could've cut the lower ones a bit...

    Workshop Revamp - WIP

Thank you for the comments so far. :-) Vinny - it is indeed "framed, ledged and braced". To insulate the roof, I'm first proposing to fix battens (that's where all the 2x2in comes in!) between the horizontal 4x2in purlins. Then, I would fill these voids with a foil-backed insulation board...

    Workshop Revamp - WIP

Spent a good six-hours on this, yesterday, but did manage to get all the joists in place before it got too dark. It did take a long time to set out all the joist locations and then, to fix each of the hangers in advance. But, I couldn't have done it without this drill and its angle driver...

    Workshop Revamp - WIP

It's a new year, I've got a little bit of money to spare and I'm going to try and make several improvements to my workshop that I've been planning for the last three-years now. Namely, this involves fitting a suspended floor overheard, insulating the roof and then replacing the up-and-over...

    milwaukee 12v versus bosch 10.8v

I can't comment on either make as I haven't used them but, for a long while, I was eyeing up the Bosch pack (partly because of the compatibility with batteries across their 10.8v range). In the end, Metabo came out with their own drills just before Christmas and I bought these purely because the...

    Waste/ Old Recyled Work Bench

Very nice looking workbench and an excellent use of "waste" materials. How long will it be before you drill in to that lovely polished top to create a series of do holes? ;-)

    Corner Unit - WIP

Good also to see that you're still using you workshop and, that you're managing very well with such a 'limited' range of tools after your grand sale a few months ago...! ;-)

axminster ts 200 or makita mlt100

If it's solely for workshop use then, you're probably best off taking the advice of others and going for the Axminster saw, which is very well regarded around here. There aren't nearly as many owners of that Makita saw on this forum but, if you're taking it with you on site, etc. then, it's a...

Nice work, James. Glad to see you're now using water-based lacquers. Good progress.

New Pillar Drill - Advice Requested Please

Looks like a decent drill but, I've read mixed reviews on those mortising attachments, over they years... :? On eBay, you could probably pick up a cheap and very basic bench=top mortiser for peanuts, if you have the space and it's only for very occasional use. If you do go for that drill or any...

    Wood Plugs

Some drill bits will allow you to cut both the larger counterbore and the clearance hole for the screw thread in one hit. If not, you'll often find it easier to drill the larger, stopped hole, first of all. You can then use the centre point left behind to follow through with the smaller bit...

    Blanket Box Project

I made a pine blanket chest for someone two-years ago [two-years, already?!?] and, after a bit of messing about with some others, I went with 50mm brass butt hinges. Cheap piano hinges are only made of thin steel that bends easily, with a brass-plating finish. In my opinion, they're much...

Help: new no volt release switch won't work

You should be able to exchange it for another one with Trend, seeing as how it is brand new. Just be careful not to do anything that might invalidate the warranty.

How would you go about this?

I like Mattty's suggestion of using a power plane to remove most of the material and then finishing off with a sharp hand plane. Don't try to bite off too much with either tool, since you're cutting across the grain. In fact, you may want to fit a sacrificial strip of scrap timber to the far...

That's an ingenious way of turning without a lathe - I like it. :-)

Monster New Bedroom Build - Finished - At Last

You're getting very good at this now, Vinny! ;-) Really like the hidden desk top though, I might have tried to make it so that it slides away instead of folding up - not that it would make the build any easier, of course!! :-)

    Latest Wardrobes

Outstanding, Jason! Thanks for sharing. Particularly like the false door in the extension.

    Mitre Station

Looks good and compact for when it comes to storage. Excellent choice in a second-hand saw, too! ;-)

    might buy this

Rob - seriously, do you think you'd be able to get your hands on one so that you could test it for F&C? ;-) It just seems like a lot of money to spend on a bench-mounted drill, when many of us are happy with drills that cost £200 or less when new. Of course, they may be right about the accuracy...

I need a new combi drill

I think Screwfix also have an 18v Bosch drill on special offer. That Makita offer mentioned by Pete only comes with the one battery. If you were prepared to spend a bit more, I know that Makita also do a three-speed combi. drill - though, I'm not sure how beneficial that extra speed setting...
