    Pro-form flexi hollower anyone?

If you want to save some cash and don't mind a bit of diy - you could buy the cutter assembly (cutter + shield) for £52 and make your own shaft and handle. I tried the tool at a club open day and quite liked it - I found it easier to cut across the inside bottom of a form compared to the Monro...

    cutting beads on platters

I use either a small spindle gouge or a small, home made bead forming tool Duncan

    turning clubs

The map on there only shows AWGB affiliated clubs and so may miss something in the required area (eg. it does not have the 3 clubs that are within 10 miles of my house). I don't of any other list of clubs other than the diary dates on the magazine site Duncan

    Trend Airshield

I got my Powercap from Screwfix. They let me try it on in the shop. It too makes a buzzing sound, but there's not really a way round that other than to mount the motor/fan away from the head like one of the belt mounted ones. The only real problem I've had with it is catching the cable from the...

    DVR warning and upgrade

That's pretty much the same as mine. The only difficult part is making the connector, and it took me a few attempts to get it right. If this is beyond you could I suggest that you contact Teknatool and your country's distributor and ask for one - the more requests they get the more chance there...

    DVR warning and upgrade

How could I have forgotten that as the main drawback with the lathe. I've asked Teknatool about making one several times and was once told that a remote box was in testing and almost ready for production. This was several years ago and nothing has appeared. Bob - are you aware of the circuit...

    Concrete Base for Lathe ?

I agree with Matt about not wanting any step to stand on - if the lip is behind you you may well step back off it and lose balance. I have my lathe on an mdf board and it doesn't extend past the end of the lathe legs. It still gets under my feet sometimes when I want to be really near to the...

    DVR warning and upgrade

As Malcolm says pens, and anything that sort of size, are easier at high speed. I don't go there very often but it's useful when I do. They do seem to be overly complex. I can't really compare them to other lathes as it's only the second one I've used - I bought it when I was very...

    Totally non-woodwork...

I learnt from the printed instructions that came with the juggling balls that my dad was given one xmas. Once I had the basic 3 ball pattern I bought a book from the local juggling shop in Manchester and taught myself everything in it. It was during my student years so I had a lot of time :) I...

    Totally non-woodwork...

Reactions to this routine are interesting. As a regular juggler and someone has a lot of juggling friends, both professional and hobbyists, I see the reaction of non-jugglers as completely different from that of jugglers. Non-jugglers tend to find it amazing (as you all have) whilst jugglers...

    DVR warning and upgrade

Because for some reason when they designed it they chose to make the speed control up and down buttons rather than a dial. If you want to go from 500 (speed at startup) to 3500 then you have to keep your finger on the up button. I've just timed it and it takes 13 seconds.

    DVR warning and upgrade

The speed input system is the major draw back to the lathe. I guess there must be some reason for keeping this method as they kept it when they released the updated XP model of the lathe. The method to access stored speed if surprisingly fast and takes just a couple of seconds. Storing new...

    DVR warning and upgrade

The sensors have a notched metal disc running through them which is attached to the main shaft. The headstock has ventilation slots to cool the interior and these let in dust. The manual recommends regularly vacuuming through these holes and holes in the rear and also blowing air through the...

    DVR warning and upgrade

I thought this might be of interest for all those with NOVA DVR lathes... when carrying out a cleaning procedure to remove dust from the DVR sensors make sure that you switch off power to the lathe and wait 30 seconds or so. A couple of months ago whilst trying to remove some persistent dust...

    Which Visor?

I tend to wear ear defenders all the time (whilst in the turning), plus a pair of custom fit ear plugs so I can listen to the radio or mp3s. The main reason is so that I can leave my ambient dust filter on all the time and it's very loud. Things get even louder when I switch on the extractor...

what size to ask for from a wood surgeon?

I was given some leylandii and despite my doubts the end result was way better than expected, with siwrling grain and areas of ripple... It was tricky to get a decent finish but the shed had a nice pine fresh scent for several days afterwards. Poplar is worth turning if you can find burrs in...

Yew Lamps with splits??....Now with shades!!!

I actually quite like them as they are. If the cracks weren't there I think they would look quite boring to be honest. The cracks give them interest. Filling with coloured resin or metal is an option but would you treat every tiny crack - if not it might look a little strange. Do you often...

    Insurance - off topic

I have this site bookmarked but I can't remember where I got it from. It looks as though you'd need to take out the CraftInsure package for £119. I haven't tried them so can't vouch.
