    Burnt black lines

You can also use circuit board backing (ie. with any actual circuit or metal layer removed - I have some from when I made boomerangs out of it). As with formica, the one advantage is that you can use it to burn grooves on faceplate work. The disadvantage is that burning these boards releases...

    Buffing System?

I hope you have some for sale at the Harrogate show. Looking forward to improved buffing...

    Dust Be Gone Mask

Same for me. I tried for ages to adjust the fit so I didn't get a hanky full of dust after a session but in the end gave up. Waste of money! Maybe it's because I have a beard?

    Anyone want this?

I was planning on it, but it'll be a while...

Thinking of turning again, advice sought.

One idea that I came up with when fed up of removing shavings and dust from shelves was to put polythene sheets over everything I want protecting. I have a sheet permanently hung in front of one set of shelves and a shower curtain that I draw in front of another that I need access to more often...

    Anyone want this?

If you have no other takers then I'm happy to come and collect it and have a go at restoration. Not far for me to travel as I'm in Newcastle. Duncan

    Buffing System?

From the results I saw on Lightweeder's work the kit appears to do a good job and I'm planning to upgrade my smaller, home-made system to it when I get some cash together and when it hits the market Duncan

    WTF is this ?

You don't need a particularly special saw to do this, although maybe the one linked to has more flex and greater range. The bloke who was teaching us at a juggling convention favoured cheap saws as they were thinner and easier to flex. It's actually good fun and harder than it looks. I managed...

    Danish oil

I remember going to a demo at our club given by Mark Baker (I think) where he used a sealer before an oil finish. On page 25 of his book 'Woodturning Projects' under the Surface Finishes heading he says 'Sanding sealers are used to seal and prepare the surface of the wood prior to the...

    Oak Burrs

Just looked at the burrs Colin and they look great. Your last photo shows them indoors on newspaper - they need to go outside asap otherwise they'll probably crack! Wrapping them in paper bags or newspaper usually helps slow the drying process and cut surfaces are usually coated with something...

    Another sun bowl!

I'd have to agree and say that £15 for that lovely bowl is way too little. Assuming the shop takes off the same commission you'll be left getting maybe less than £10. You may not have to pay for the wood but you should still factor in a cost for it - you may not always have access to free...

Purchasing hard wood in the northeast

I use Newcastle Hardwood occasionally. They're usually very helpful and if they don't have what you want they can probably order it. I've only used them for small amounts of timber and they once let me raid their off cut bin for a small length I needed. Duncan

Big 09 UKW Turning Competition : Pen Winners now announced !

Well done to everyone who entered and congratulations to the other winners. Thanks to the judges for giving their time. I was wondering about maybe starting a monthly challenge along the lines of photo challenges which I've taken part in in the parts. Someone sets a challenge (eg. a box) and...

    Looking for Jewellery Findings

I've used Rashbel in the past for cuff links and pendant parts - always small orders but no problems so far. Duncan

    Help with buying new jaws

I have the SuperNova Deluxe and SuperNova 2 chucks with the following jaws: PowerGrip, Step, Long Nose, Cole It all depends on the size of work you do as to what to recommend. I use the PowerGrip and Step jaws the most but those are the ones I've had the longest and have got used to using. For...

    Hammer King

General consensus in the juggling community (of which I'm a part) is that it's a fake. The part with the nail is a close up which makes faking easier.

Big 09 UKW Turning Competition : Pen Winners now announced !

It would have been good to have some sort of posting system that allowed you to see your own entry but not every one else's until the deadline had passed. Probably not possible on this forum though

The Big 09 UKW turning comp : submissions only

Unfortunately I've been without my lathe for 6 or 7 weeks and since then my health hasn't been great so I'm afraid my plans for something new have failed :( I'm submitting something that I've posted before but I've taken some new photos which better match the true colour ... Nova 1624-44 A Big Disapointment

This is a distressing tale indeed, and having paid out a fair amount of money you should obviously have satisfaction. I'd like to see the video you took of it (I was going to say in operation, but I guess it wasn't :( ). Having never had a pulley driven lathe I don't have any suggestions of...

    Wireless printers

I have an HP Photosmart C6100 that I'm happy with. It is wireless but also has a network and a usb socket. I use it connected to my (wireless) router with a network cable but I've also sometimes connected it to the router wirelessly. The printer puts out a series of web pages which let you...
