    Turning rattles

I've made several with bells in and they work just fine as long as the walls aren't too thick. I drill small holes though the end which helps some of the sound escape and, according to my brother who's kids I gave my first ones to, they give visual interest and help with some developmental thing...

    Hole drilling advice please

No problem. Hope every thing's running smoothly now.

    Grinding jigs

Hi Al I read you post and just noticed your name - are by any chance the Cambridge unicyclist who Roger (from the Durham club and Unicycle.com) mentioned to me last week? I have the Trugrind jig and it's generally good, although the new version has a slight flaw. There are plenty of other...

    Single or dual motor extractor?

I don't bother trying to collect shavings in an extractor whilst I'm turning as they tend to fly everywhere anyway and you still need to clean up afterwards. I'm lucky in that my lathe stand has a gap underneath the bed in which I can place a dustbin to collect shavings. The bin also serves as a...

    Incredible Chinese balls

I just saw this video posted on Andi Wolfe's blog and thought people here would be interested. It'll never be the sort of thing that I'd want to turn but I certainly admire what he produces.

    New Axminster Sharpening system

It looks good, but the one problem I would have is the long shaft (on the right in the first photo). My grinder is up against a wall as that's the only place I have for it in my small shed. I wouldn't be able to push it in to use the fingernail jig as it would hit the back wall. I overcame this...

    Duncan's turnings 2010

Thanks for the comments. Hopefully I'll be posting more regularly as I've set myself the task of producing at least one finished item every 2 weeks...

    Bowl foot sizing

I pretty much always do the 2nd of Russell's suggestions - turn the outer shape to give the bowl shape complete with foot and add the spigot/dovetail as an extra element connected to the bottom of the foot. You waste a little of the depth of the wood but it's usually worth it.

    Duncan's turnings 2010

It's been a while, but I've finally got something new to post - a couple of boxes that were prompted by the birthday of a friend First is a sycamore box (although you could call it a hollow form as it's not that practical as a box). 10cm high with ~5mm wall thickness thickening towards the base...

    Selling Blanks

I won't be buying anything as postage is likely to be high, but my preference is always for square blanks. I lucky to have a bandsaw though. It gives more options and lets you do square edged bowls etc. Marten Pidgen pretty much always sells square blanks as it saves prep. time and this means...

    Couple of experimental pieces!

That pyrography piece is fantastic, and it must have taken a while to burn

    Hollow form tools

Had a thought last night - given the size of your lathe I doubt that you'll be turning anything that needs the capacity of the large Munro tool. Unless, of course, you're planning on getting a larger machine in the future.

    Hollow form tools

Yep, no problem. I also have the Sorby straight and curved hollowers that you can try along with some home made ones that I showed you last time I came round. I'll mail you

    Summer smocks???

T shirt and shorts but always steel toe cap shoes. A JPS powercap helps keep air moving over my face so that cools a little but the top of my head still tends to get too hot. When the weather is at it's hottest I open up the shed window coverings (hinged sheets of ply since I got broken into a...

    Bowl Gouge sharpening

Would it be useful if I came round some time to see what's happening and give some advice? I may have some free time next week. And is any of that oak still lying around?

    Woodcut Tru-Grind problem

I'll try this tonight to see if it improves things. The annoying thing is that I have the original version and the current one. Tightening the original was never a problem - it has always held the tools securely. The original nut worked really well. Also, the original base has the tool socket...

    Woodcut Tru-Grind problem

Axminster also sell them as well - that's where I got mine from

    How doyou do that?

If you're really daunted by the corners you can always take them off with a plane to make the blank octagonal. That's what the person who taught me suggested at a night class. It really doesn't make much difference though because by the time you've done that you could probably have made a...

    Green grub in log

As I was interested in what it was I put it back in the log where it came from and when it turned into a pupae I collected it and put it in a jar. It's finally changed and I think it's an Angel Shades moth... See here - http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=1731

    Woodcut Tru-Grind problem

Someone was selling one at a decent price and I thought it would be useful to have 2 set up each with different angles. I've had a look at the problem knob  and for some reason they used a reverse thread so it's not just a question of replacing the knob with something better. As far as...
