What size turning tools to start with?

Thanks for the link, That's useful to know about the Henry Taylor tools. I had a look at the other manufacturers sites to see how to identify HSS: Henry Taylor tools - Dark stained beech handle = HSS, Yellow handles = Carbon Steel. Robert Sorby, HSS is stamped on the shaft. (Are there...

What size turning tools to start with?

I assume I should go for HSS in addition to this? I was at a market last weekend and I had a chance of buying a good looking second hand spindle gouge (I think it was crown) for £20, I couldn't see HSS on it anywhere so i didn't buy it, anyway I thought he was looking for a bit much for it as it...

Can you change your settings so that the little page icon doesn't dissappear after you've read a post?

    BE nice to her LOL

She may have a point about the litter (Commenting from experience, I used to live over there, not much better over here) But complaining that it's cold??? Hello Gwyneth you're from Canada, 4 or 5 months of arctic conditions every year!!! As for the rain, she should move over to Ireland...

    Router lathe

Adam, I learned to drive on one of them. Les, I want to get a lathe anyway and I know I'll need the "router lathe" or whatever to do the barley twists. By hand eh! that could be interesting, I'll check that out as initially I only want 4 (But 4 big ones). I priced the posts when getting...

    Router lathe

Hi Adam, Missed that one, very nice, bit costly though  $350 in the US would probably mean about €900 in ROI (Rip Off Ireland as opposed to Rep of I) and I've got a lot of things on that wish list :D P.S. re avitar, Is that your 35 you're sitting on?

    Router lathe

Hi, I'm installing a kitchen at the moment and I'd like to add some barley twist posts (Probably at a later date when I have more time to get over a few learning curves  ). Anyway, I'm using this as an excuse to get a lathe, as it's been on a long time wishlist, but I'll also need some...

    Jigsaw and drill advice

 How hard is this wood :?: Sounds like you were using a seriously dull bit. Was it a cheap spade bit? they are pretty useless when they get blunt.

    Jigsaw and drill advice

Use it like a file, but rasp with the grain as much as you can, not directly across the grain. See comment above: Also work from both sides when chizeling. About half way through like with the drilling.

    A Salutary Lesson

I have a 2003 SIP woodworking catalogue, it has a 16" variable speed for £60, which has a "quick blade changing", the SIP Item number is 01357. I wonder is this the same one that was at the show? It's not on their website.

    Jigsaw and drill advice

You should try and get your hands on some cheap pine and practice on that first. Mark out your holes on both sides. Drill out some holes leave some waste all the way around particularly at the end grain side Or cut out the holes with a jig saw leaving some waste. Buy a rasp  (I'm going...
