Straight edge for jointing, best method

I would joint straight from the saw. Use a No.8 for preference - you will get away with a No.7. The plane must be sharp. Start the cut by pressing hard on the knob, and pushing the plane forward - as stated earlier, curl the fingers of left hand around the plane, it both steadies the plane, and...

    It never happens in Europe!

I lived in Toronto for a while, my boss had moved from Montréal. He told me that Montreal was twinned with Bruges in Belgium, and the Mayor of Montréal had recently visited the city of Bruges. In a conversation with his opposite number, he discovered that Bruges total civic budget was...

Best finish for a oak new oak porch

I built mine about 10 years ago, it was made of ‘stable’ oak (left in stick for a couple of years before use). No finish applied. It’s doing fine.

    Bevel angle for gouge

I used in-cannel when making my rocking chairs. I am nowhere near being an expert, i just found them better. I obviously need some tuition.

    Well that's embarrassing !

I’ve just had to make some drawer boxes for my chisels and gouges. Is that a problem, d’you think?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

This is my third attempt at answering your question. I must be really stupid! Thanks for the praise, I really can’t estimate the time. Elapsed time was about 20 months, but I didn’t work on them very quickly. As a guideline, each spindle took between two and a half and three hours for initial...

    Workbench build advice

Hello Steve, I’m afraid that I cannot offer much by way of positive advice (my bench I made twenty plus years ago of heavyweight 100mm beech), but I would be very cautious about man-made materials in a concrete building. You will need to be very careful of condensation. Best wishes.
