Makita benchtop thicknesser dust collection issue

I have what looks to be the same thicknesser as you (Makita 2012NB) and use it with a vacuum-type extractor (not a proper HVLP chip extractor) – specifically one of these (it's a generic one, there are loads of what seems to be the same design under different brands). I do however use a...

    Wood working mask recommendation

I really like a powered respirator: JSP Powercap Active IP Powered Respirator Impact Protection (there are many others on the market). The air blows down across your eyes so the visor never fogs up, and it keeps you cool. It has a little bit of vibration which is annoying, but other than that is...

Purchase of a new table saw - needs to be moveable

I would say if you want portable, just get a reasonably cheap one. If you stick with the hobby and end up setting up a workshop, that's the time to look into getting a "proper" cast iron cabinet saw. In my opinion, fancy portable saws like the TKS 80 aren't worth it for home workshop use, you're...

    Workshop dust filter

I have a Microclene cylinder type filter (older version of this one: TF470 Thor Filtration Air Filter Microclene MC420 Air Filter For Garage Size Workshop - TF470). It's alright but very noisy, I use it with a generic plug in fan speed controller from Amazon and run it at about half speed which...

Flat top grooving/slotting circular saw blàde?

I have a DeWalt DT4311 (250mm 3mm kerf flat top ground ripping blade; about £30), and a CMT 180mm 6mm kerf grooving blade (about £50). I presume the reason they don't make a larger (200/250mm) grooving blade is it would overload the saw motor or cause belts to slip etc.

    Best nail gun

I've got a Ryobi Airstrike 16 gauge and have been super impressed with it. As far as I recall I've never had a jam, and it drives probably something like 1000+ 50mm nails on a charge (5Ahr). Heavy though, and I feel like it doesn't perform as well on small batteries (2Ahr; I had to increase the...

    table saw runners.

I got some UHMW at a local plastics distributor, they had a useful sized offcut for a few pounds. Not very helpful I know. I've also used Ikea chopping boards in the past for other things I needed to make from UHMW (or similar). Just wanted to emphasise what recipio said – be very careful! I...

Travelling to the US - what would you buy

I used to go to the US several times a year for work, until covid. While I never really brought anything significant back (I might have bought an iPad once?), I'm not aware of a single occasion where my bag was scanned/inspected by customs coming back into the UK. How does it even work at a busy...

Larch vs. treated softwood for fence?

Obviously not rocket science, but for anyone reading this in the future, and like me not really knowing what you're doing, here are some design details and a rough drawing. I used 3m 100x100m posts, cut in half at a 20 degree angle to shed water better, with three 75x43mm rails (I cut the top...

Chisel sizes, what do you actually use??

In my hobby workshop (I mostly use power tools everywhere I can) the 25mm chisel is the one I used the most, and the only one I keep out on the bench with the rest of the set in a drawer. Second most used is a 20mm Narex skew chisel, for trimming off plugs over screw holes etc or effectively as...

Best 6" Random Orbital Sander or should I get a forced rotation (geared) Sander?

I have a Bosch GEX 150 AC I bought in 2017 for £105. It's been brilliant, and the dust collection is very close to perfect. It looks like this model has been discontinued. If/when I next buy a new sander, I would get a Rotex-style geared model, for faster material removal.

Larch vs. treated softwood for fence?

Thanks everyone – I ended up going with untreated larch above ground, and concrete spur posts (bolted to larch upper posts). I've painted some Sika wood preserver on the larch with a foam roller, hopefully that'll help it last longer.

Larch vs. treated softwood for fence?

I need to replace a short section of fence. There is a local sawmill (Bespoke Larch And Oak Cutting,Fencing,In CambridgeshireCladding http) that does larch, however it's only dip-treated rather than properly pressure treated. I've used their larch before (not for fencing) and been pretty happy...

Einhell Digital Benchdrill - Coming Soon to Aldi

You're much, much better off with a cheap conventional pillar drill, e.g. Clarke CDP5EB 5 Speed Bench Mounted Pillar Drill (230V) - Machine Mart - Machine Mart for £95. It's cast iron, has a standard induction motor (which you'll still be able to easily replace or service 50 years from now, with...

    UK source for 2.5" Loc-Line?

Morning – I came across this: and thought it looked useful. But I can't find 2.5" Loc-Line (81202 – 2-1/2″ Vacuum Hose 2pc (1 ft Segment) | Loc-Line) available in the UK... anyone got a source or know of an alternative product? Thanks

Power files? Any advice / experience please?

I also have a Silverline 260W one, which at the time was £27. It's feels very chintzy but has worked well for everything I've used it on (mostly metal).

    Femi tools.

I have a Femi metal-cutting bandsaw, and it's a quality tool. Perfectly aligned and square out of the box and cuts beautifully. It is one of their made in Italy ones though – I believe they also have cheaper models not made in Italy, so check what you're getting if that concerns you.

    Tempertaure and humiduty digital reader?

I have a Chinese particulate (PM2.5/etc) air quality meter that also displays temperature and RH. It looks like this: PM2.5 Detector Module Household Air Quality Dust Sensor LCD Display Monitor DC5V 8889893321087 | eBay (but not endorsing that particular unit or seller – I got mine years ago on...
