    Home from hols...

I've often wondered whether the best deterrent is to have an alarm INSIDE the house so that if they break in the 110dB siren will make such a din that they will not be able to hear anyone coming to the house or the police arriving. With a bit of luck it would disorientate the b*****ds so much...

    Electrolytic derusting my experience (wip)

Lee, Do you really need such thick cables for the supply? The current flowing in the thin wires which you are hanging the pieces from should be the same as the current flowing from the supply. If it is not enough to melt the thin wire then the thick cable is probably overkill unless you are...

    electrticians view sought

I can't find a reference but I have always understood that unplugging equipment was a particular requirement if the property was fed by an overhead electrical feed. This is so that if the overhead cable should get hit by lightning the equipment would be undamaged. I don't think underground...

    Electric underfloor heating

Have you looked at some of the under plinth electric fan heaters? While probably not a 'trendy' as UFH they would at least give you back the space from the storage heater. Andrew

    What is it?

Struth! That place has changed. I lived just behind the car park that you can see in the background for a short time when I was over there and that dock area just behind the Art Gallery was pretty run down then. Bet it costs a pretty penny to live there now. Andrew

    What is it?

Is it something like the largest wooden building in the world?

    What is it?

My first thought was that it wasn't that big but comparing it to the building in front it looks to be 4 or 5 storeys to the start of the roof and another 4-5 storeys to the apex. That's quite big. One thought was that it might be the Chinese factory where all of Axminster's machine tools are...

    What is it?

Are the stripes significant. And is it woodworking related?

    Billions to one?

Would that also work for taxis that park in Mandatory Cycle Lanes?

    how cool is this!

20Mb of free disk space just to drive the keyboard. Sheeesh. I remember the time when 20Mb was all you got. And you had to share it with the rest of the company. Am I showing my age? Andrew

House auctions and psychology of bidding

It does look to me rather as if the roof may have been replaced at some point. It looks as if it was originally thatched and that the upstairs windows would have been dormer windows, probably with the roof finishing at the highest horizontal beam at the bottom of the window line. Andrew

House auctions and psychology of bidding

This is what I have never understood about guide prices. To my mind a guide price should be the auctioneer saying 'this is what we think it will go for' so that people can make the necessary arrangements for surveys and the like if they can afford it. But to then set a reserve that is above the...

End grain tongue and groove for floorboards

Well I'm going with Andy's suggestion of using a loose tongue for this. I've just ordered a suitable bearing guided slot cutter router bit from Wealden since they seem to be well recommended on these forums. Since I've never used one of these 'assemble them yourself' type cutters is there any...

    Small diameter rubber tubing?

That seems to be a common problem which is why they now offer this: http://preview.tinyurl.com/yv3y8g But I though you all trusted me :-)

End grain tongue and groove for floorboards

That's a good idea. I hadn't thought about loose tongues. Each board will be secret nailed to the joist through its tongue so I am not expecting movement to be a major problem although if I am going the loose tongue route then no reason I shouldn't use silicon. Oh, and the boards has been...

End grain tongue and groove for floorboards

My project for next weekend is to lay a new tongue and groove hardwood floor in the hall. To allow for a recessed mat one section will not go right to the door and what is more the end will be angled. I want to put an additional strip across this end and since the rest of the boards are tongue...

    Been Looking at Google Earth...

Doesn't surprise me. Microsoft have been known in the past to produce a different page based on what browser you are using. Doesn't work in Opera either. Andrew

    Been Looking at Google Earth...

Named after the long since disappeared Tudor Palace of Nonsuch House in Surrey? Are the other roads in the area similarly named? Andrew
