    tv recording

Yes. In the analogue world both your video and TV have analogue tuners in them. If you get a digital TV you are only changing the tuner in the TV so the video can still only receive analogue signals. As you say, you can record the programme that you are watching (or not, if you are out) by...

    Crackly Land Line

Had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Be aware that if it was dragging broadband speeds down it will take about five days for a higher speed to be established. The equipment at the exchange end needs five days without re-synching before it switches to the higher speed. Andrew

    What's The Idea With These?

I have the Metabo version and the switch is a slide switch on the top rather than a trigger with a push button lock on the side. Being Left-handed it means that it doesn't accidently get locked in the on position. Andrew

    Bosch Multipurpose Tool

Yes. With the old model. I bought some when they first came out and although not as well made as the Fein blades they work fine. They were on offer and I bought a few. The Fein blades are so espensive that the Multimaster is very much my tool of last resort. There is an adapter but I think it...

    Another Cycling Question

I think you will find that cycling on a footpath that does not run parallel to a road (a pavement) is actually legal unless signs indicate otherwise. Here, here. The problem is that a lot of councils think that putting up a blue and white sign suddenly makes pavement cycling safe. It doesn’t...

Big Brother can now spy on our phone records

't wouldn't work. You start a 'Freedom Party' and campaign at the next election (whether that be next month or next year) with a manifesto commitment to get rid of phone tapping / cctv / id cards / speed camera etc. The next Daily Mail headline wold be 'Freedom Party to make it easy for muggers...

Photo hosting - Sony Image Station to close!

Just had an email to say that Yahoo! Photos is closing as well - but in this case because they are transferring everything to Flickr. Andrew

do a lot of work for charity

I came across one of Steve Maskery's YouTube videos about woodworkers in Sierra Leone last week. It showed a guy making furniture using a collection of donated old tools. It did occur to me that somewhere out there there may be someone earning a pittance making furniture using a plane that is...

    SATNAV

Get a TomTom then. They use Linux and some people are developing other applications for them. I have not tried it but believe there is a video viewer either available or in the pipline. Stick a DVD on a SD card and plug it in while waiting for SWMBO to finish her shopping :-) Andrew

    SOLD: Collins Complete Woodworker's Manual

Selling this for my father who seems to have acquired a spare copy. Much recommended by members of these forums. This is (I think) the older edition in as much as there is has been a new edition within the last year or so. It is in good condition with only a slight mark on one corner of the rear...

    More flooring advice please

If the plumber/electrician were to blame for the poor state of the boards then are there still pipes/cables under the floor. If so then what would worry me would be that once it is down there is no access to them and sod's law says that as soon as you have finished there will be a leak or SWMBO...

    Converting 35mm slides to digits

Roger, I have a proper 35mm film scanner that would do it. More than happy to scan them for you provided you are not talking about a complete collection :-) Andrew

    Sea Air

Oi! you lot. Stop it. Some of us are about as far from the sea as one can get in this country. Andrew (who grew up less than ten minutes from the sea (when the tide was in))
