    drilling jig

I made one using a row of 30mm holes to take a router guide bush. Then use the router in plunge mode with a suitable sized straight cutter. Gives a much more consistent depth and angle than a drill. Works for me. Andrew

    Old Record 52 1/2 Vise

I don't know specifically about vice but a lot of the differences between English English and American English spellings stem from a certain 'Frenchification' of the language at some point (I think around the middle of the eighteenth century but am not certain.) Hence the early emigrants took...

    Fuel!

I've never quite understood this argument. If they are competing on international routes then they can fill up over there (and continental hauliers have to fill up over here when in the UK). If they are comparing purely national deliveries then continental hauliers are not competition. I would...

    Fuel!

What I was taking exception to was that you first said ... ... then went on to imply that fuel cells were. I was trying to point out that electric cars are as green / not green as fuel cells. It is all dependent on the original source of the required electricity. Andrew

    Fuel!

What exactly is it that these protesters are protesting about? I know it is the price of petrol but are they unhappy about the price of crude or the tax on it? If its the price of crude oil, and it has doubled in the past couple of years, then they really ought to be protesting somewhere like...

    Fuel!

Are you talking about fuel cells powered by ethanol derived from biofuels or from Hydrogen? If hydrogen, as I suspect, then it is produced by electrolysis which involves electricity. That electricity will be as green or non-green as the electricity used in electric cars. The hydrogen is just an...

    Satnav updates

Just be aware though that the cheaper TomTom UK units do not have a slot for a SD Card so you are limited to what maps you can use on them. You couldn't, for example, add the Western Europe map because it takes up more memory than is available. Single country maps might work but, again, check...

    I'm speechless

Just a thought. But would you have any recourse against the Tree Surgeons. They were the ones that did the work. There surely must be some duty of care requiree by them to ensure that the hedge they are trimming actully belongs to the person giving them the instructions. Andrew

    Dakota Waterstone Grinder

I can't help but feel that based on the responses so far the issue is not really one of edge versus face sharpening on a grindstone but one of the quality of the machines. If someone produced a flat waterstone to the quality of the Tormek I am sure a lot more people would recommend it. Andrew

    Changes at B&Q ???

Doubly so when it puts them into direct competition with Homebase and even to a lesser extent places like IKEA.

    Well Done Wales (Football)

But you didn't get through to the European championships. Ahh, nor did we. :-( Perhaps the BBC could be persuaded to show episodes of NYW in the slots where they scheduled all the England games :-)

    Another Cycling Question

Ahhh, now you are changing the 'rules'. Define adult, define 'potentially dangerous velocity', define vicinity. Andrew

    Another Cycling Question

I assume you would apply that to roller skates and pushchairs as well. :-)

    Another Cycling Question

I think Hammond is a keen cyclist anyway so probably quite capable at maintaining a good speed. You don't need 'calf muscles the size of Arnies' biceps' if you are small and fit and riding a very lightweight carbon-fibre bike. Was it ia Bianchi? Andrew

    Another Cycling Question

Which is fine for a leisure cyclist but some people actually use their bikes as a means of transport. Therefore where they need to go dictates where they cycle. There are a lot more of those in London since the congestion charge was introduced. Andrew

    paints

I think you can get sample pots of all their paints at the mixing desk - not just the emulsion. Sure I have done that in the past and found that for a small quantity two or three identical samples works out cheaper than a small tin and contains the same. Andrew

    Joined the Festool Club

It's like the hand tool slope. You're not at the top until you have bought your first.

    Joined the Festool Club

I have several projects using sheet materials that I have been putting off in anticipation of getting a Festool TS55 at some point in the near future. It was not so much a case of funds more getting my act together to find the best deal. So, it was with interest that I noted a couple of weeks...

    tv recording

16k, eh lad, that's luxury. My Nascom 1 had 1k, plus 1k video. And I managed to write 'space invaders' for it - in hand-compiled machine-code. Andrew

    tv recording

Nah, the only work arounds a kludges required to be able to watch the programme you wanted was to make sure you got home in time. We didn't used to have things like videos, Heck we didn't used to have more than two channels to choose from! Andrew (who remembers two channels but only just)
