    Trying out the new Lathe

George, I have a small stash of beech, that's why most of the things I have tried out as spindle type turning are made from it. If I stumble across some ash I will be using that next.

    Trying out the new Lathe

Well its now later, here is the skew. Never heard of the maker (MOULSON BROTHERS) but then I am not well up on that sort of thing. It is roughly 1.5" wide and the edges are rounded, this was a bonus, the seller on ebay had not mentioned that, but its what I was looking for after using...

    Trying out the new Lathe

Chas, This is one I have used quite a lot, it looks odd as it is not ground symmetrical, when I got it I thought it as wrong but it works. I have since found this type of grind in a booklet on sharpening I got from Peter Child. I was thinking of just swinging the new gouge a bit when I grind...

    Trying out the new Lathe

Well I have had some time using the perform, to prove it I have taken a few pictures of the stuff I have made. :D I have already posted about the cup and ball toy, I shortened the string, it was supposed to make it easier to do, well I still can't do it but most of my work colleagues can...

    Best thin parting tool

Well they are for metal work, there is a holder that this tool steel is mounted in and that is then clamped to the tool post. The blade is not as deep as the ones sold for wood work, so will not be as rigid, must admit at that price I am tempted to get one to try out. :? Just found this one a...

    Sharpening Kirschen 1101 Chisels

Hi Simon, Your correct on both points, unfortunately a highly polished finish does not guarantee that the backs will be flat. :? I would try cellulose thinners, it takes most of that sort of stuff off. :)

nut and bolt in boxwood workshop pics

As George said I machined the box wood into the hexagon for this and as you have asked how it was done a few pictures of the process. I used a Trend Router Lathe, this is a some what cumbersome device to use, compare to a normal lathe and obviously did not sell well as Trend have stopped selling...

I see were you went wrong, full collar and tie along with smart trousers, pressed with turn ups would have prevented this problem.

My first workshed and my new workshop basework

I can remember as a child, 9 or 10 getting very cross at not being able to saw a straight line. :? I wrote 'why cant I saw straight' on a bit of wonky cut wood, dad pick up the wood and I then got into trouble as my spelling was worse than my sawing. I am please to say my spelling is...

    nut and bolt in boxwood

George, It has been worth the wait, a wonderful looking piece, I hope your dad is pleased with it. The routing was just a case of setting the machine and turning the handle, its you skill chasing the thread that makes it all work. :D I am going to print this out and take the picture to show...
