    Ultimate router set

I picked up a cheap "set" of maybe 30 bits when I first bought a router ... a few years down the line most are pristine unused ... whereas the additional Whealans ones I've bought for specific purposes are well used. Buy exactly what you need for a specific task ... don't bother with "sets" ...

    Squaring up a vice?

I have a Hofmann & Hammer workbench I acquired a few years ago ... very solid and stable, compact for my small workshop, but it has 2 end and 2 side vices which works well for me as it lies in the centre of the room ... Problem is, the main side vice I use has developed a considerable degree of...

    Pricing up wood?

Just been to Nidd Valley Sawmills in Summerbridge/Dacre, west of Harrogate. It looks like an old-fashioned or traditional sawmill ... piles of logs in the front, big stacks of sticked up sawn planks drying all around. I was looking for some ash for a couple of dining chairs, and came away with...

Best bandsaw for 400 to 600 pounds?

I'd love the Basato 5-4 mentioned above, but even if I could justify the price I could never get it down the stairs into my basement, and if I did it's too tall ... However, I have the next size down, the Basato 4, and it does all sorts of re-sawing, bowl blank cutting etc really well. Nicely...

    Drum Sander envy

I have been using a Carroll drum sander in my pillar drill for this sort of work and it's excellent. A cheap pillar drill, new or SH, even if it was a bit wobbly for accurate drilling would still work OK perhaps? I built a table and fence quickly out of MDF. Just a thought ... not a "proper"...

    Pro Edge belts Update

I have been using these new belts, and the fine one puts a lovely edge on my tools, without running hot or loosing a lot of steel. Very pleasing addition to a sharpener I'm very pleased with.

    Tool / Machine share ?

I understand some of these "not sure" reactions ... but from practical experience Matthew has loaned out Workshop Heaven supplies to great effect ... I know he may have a "commercial interest" in this ... but on his "pass-around's" I've had bits of kit to play with that have been through...

Narex Bevel Edge and Mortice Chisel Passaround

I have a set of the mortice chisels and they are amazingly good ... biggest problem I have found is that they cut so well it's easy to get carried away and blow a mortice apart if it's near the end of the timber as you've a slot full of chunks ... that's the user, not the tool!

    Workshop Essentials - Great stuff

I was thinking of a small square table - "Shakerish" - wondering whether to include a drawer - and whether that means I should make a dovetail jig too first, or just do them by hand! Any idea how many people actually make jigs from your videos? I've seen a number of comments in threads about...

    Workshop Essentials - Great stuff

Steve Maskery gets quite a few mentions on this site, and pops up with useful contributions. Here's another ... I ordered the 3 bandsaw videos. The first confirmed my saw was pretty well tuned, but fettled it a bit more. Then I built the fine adjuster fence and the other jigs for cutting...

    Square Holes

Macintosh certainly made interesting looking chairs, but I'm not completely convinced about his "brilliance" as a designer of chairs ... as whilst they look good they often are everything but comfortable to sit on ... as surely that is the function of a chair and should be part of the design...

Abrasive belts for Sorby Pro Edge

    Hi Paul I got them from Turners Retreat ... http://www.turners-retreat.co.uk/acatal ... ystem.html

    Picture attachments?

I don't think I've done anything to change my browser settings, etc ... but recently when I look at posts with pictures included in this forum I occasionally briefly see the picture but it is replaced with an icon representing the picture. I can see this if I click on it ... just the picture...

Abrasive belts for Sorby Pro Edge

Slight variation on the topic - but I've been trying the new abrasive belts Sorby have brought out, in 600 and 3000 grit - very pleased with the sharp polished edge on my turning tools ... not sure if it matters that much on my bowl gouges (but I think it probably should) but on a skew chisel it...

    Nidd Valley timber yard?

I've driven past the timber yard at Dacre Bank west of Harrogate, but never stopped. Googling them finds a whole lot of "business directory" sort of entries, but no web site etc. They aren't listed in the map of timber merchants in this forum. Has anyone sourced much from them? I'm a hobby...

    Its deep - man

Just to add to the "take care" message ... a year or so ago I was trying to use a "standard size" scrapper in the bottom of a wavy natural-edge bowl at pretty-much the full length of the tool. A catch dragged the tool down, and my left hand over the rest into the rim ... I had some deep cuts on...

    Excellent couple of days ...

Hi Ian I wasn't familiar with it either - it's Woodoc 20 - looks like a varnish in the tin - applied with a brush - 3 coats and then burnishing cream gave the gloss finish, or applied, left for 10 minutes until tack and then gently wiped off the excess left the silk finish.

    Excellent couple of days ...

The bread bin and toaster ... that was another course! The tall thin cedar one is 22 cm high if that helps further with scale ... thought keeping some familiar-ish elements in the first picture would help. Went on a course there for a variety of reasons. Had met Phil on his stand at the...

    Excellent couple of days ...

Some pictures of my work from this course ... These are 3 pieces resulting from my 2 days with Phil ... The first was a piece of wych elm, turned wet and hollowed with the pro-forme tool with a wall thickness of about 4 mm. Finished with polyurethane sealer, wiped to give a silk surface...
