    Narex Chisels- Mini review

Just to update - one of my set also needed a mm or so grinding off after it chipped ... but that was a one-off ... I have chopped out a lot of wood with these, and the steel, the handles and all are great - good tools at a sensible price ... wondering if the cabinet-makers bevel-edged will be as...

    Arundel E5 lathe questions

Sorry - just spent nearly an hour trying to re-connect or re-register with Flikr that I have previously used to post photo's here ... not prepare to spend any more time being messed about with and rejected ... happy to PM photo's though ...

    Narex mortise chisels

Different handles ... Matthew lent me one of each ... and I bought a set. Am very pleased with them, great tools and a very reasonable price I felt.

Restoring parallel on a side vice?

I have a Hofmann & Hammer bench with an LGA single-screw side-vice .. got a good deal on it ... and building your own is a great idea, but if you don't have a bench to build it from, only a rickety Workmate, how good is your build going to be? Anyhow ... been very happy with it generally ...

    How was Harrogate then??

I went of Friday ... VERY VERY busy first thing, but thinned out significantly within an hour or two. Some of it much the same ... but some regulars missing, and some changed ... Phil Irons without a single bit of blue metal for instance and The Tool Room not present with any heavy metal either...

    Arundel E5 lathe questions

It looks very similar to the Arudel Junior I have - my first lathe, that my Grandfather got in 1975 when he retired. I got it after he died ... cleaned it up (I used bicycle oil and WD40 mainly), got a copy of Keith Rowley's book, bought a few tools ... and dived down the slope! I bought a...

    Why Now?

Vann is right - before the internet made it easy, I didn't know that the tools in my local shops and sheds weren't that good ... so I thought I couldn't use a plane because it was a cheap Stanley one from a shed. Then I learned about sharpening, proper steel, quality tools ... and found I could...

Darn you axminster, I want a presicion chuck!!!

I have a nova, a versachuck and a patriot (bought in that order) ... I liked the idea of the latter, but went right off it when I used the jaws quite wide and one was at the limit of grip ... the jaw came off, and so did the bigish bowl ... could have been horrid but only a big dent in the...

    Pricing stuff?

I think that's what I'm looking at Chris, getting a bit back to pay for tools/toys. As Toby said, "getting out there" ...

    Buggered chuck?

CALL SORBY!!! Definitely the right advice. I did ... got put through to someone ... who talked through the item and the problem ... his initial reaction was "I'll send DHL to collect it so we can fix it" and then (without any ask or demand from me) this went on to "I'll send you a replacement...

    Buggered chuck?

I was using a Patriot chuck I bought almost a year ago at the Harrogate Show (as a backup to my other Nova) doing some spindle work using some fine long-neck jaws. Went to try to release the waste after cutting off the completed work, and the hex just spun with a clicking sensation. It turns...

    Pricing stuff?

This may come to nothing ... but ... I'm completely new to this game as a hobby turner - but totally unexpected, a bit of gossip in a local cafe/deli as a customer led to them asking me if I could make some small pieces that they could try to sell as an extra bit of the business, especially in...

    jig making dvd

+1 I have the bandsaw/router-related disks, and a number of his jigs are in regular use ... the fine-adjustable fence is a permanent fixture on my bandsaw, and the tenon jig has been well used.

    Grinding down chuck jaws?

P.S. : Glad I'm not the only one who got a huge amount out of the course ... it was the teaching of quite subtle technical tips and skills that are difficult to explain in a book or a DVD but can be practiced or demonstrated for real, in combination with the discussions of planning, shaping and...

    Grinding down chuck jaws?

Hi Mick This sounds excellent ... doing it yourself, and maybe getting the jaws lined up "in use" rather than free off the chuck sounds good too. But ... I only have one lathe (a WivaMac, with reasonable grunt if that's important?) ... but I have no experience of engineering metal lathes...

    Grinding down chuck jaws?

Spent a fabulous 3 days with Richard Raffin (what a nice man) at Phil Irons new place (both terrific teachers) ... (this isn't a gloat, honest!) ... learn't a lot, VERY hospitable, but we talked and used chucks, and I could see their idea that VicMarc jaw tops are profiled completely flat...

I cant believe how hard it is...

Had decent stuff from both Niche Timbers and British Hardwoods - but deeply unimpressed by Boddy's ... one other place well worth a look is the sawmill at Dacre ... old-fashioned sticked-up logs piled around ... got half a dozen lovely bits of ash at a very reasonable price.

    Advice regarding courses

I spent a really good couple of days with Phil Irons doing his hollow forms course - learned loads, and had a great time. Highly recommended!

    Sharpening directions

Idle thought occurred to me as I walked home from the butchers ... which direction is right or the best for the blade against a stone, steel or whatever? I watched 3 butchers each with their own technique for sharpening a knife ... one held the knife still pointing away from him and pulled the...
