    Pro-form flexi hollower anyone?

Steve I've got the pro forme because I too was impressed by them when I saw Phil demonstrating them ... haven't mastered them by any means (yet!) ... I'm not far down the A64 in Leeds if you want another look/play?

    The bowl that bit back

All the best - hope it's not too sore and you don't get too much grief from your other half ... and that you don't run into "exciting" developments like I did when I tried to mangle my left hand a few months back ...

    bandsaw help please

The ceiling height in my workshop is limiting - but have read a lot of reviews and discussions here, and seen a few machines at demos, I'm thinking about a Scheppach Bassato 4 ... the 5 or 6 looked like very nice bits of kit though too big, heavy and expensive for my setup ...

Advice on a turning a lamp

I have done them by rough-turning the base between centres and forming a tenon - then mount the base in a chuck and form the base properly and hollow out the centre socket for the stem to fit into (including sanding/finishing) - then reverse-mount on the chuck with the jaws expanded into the...

    Struggling with spheres ...

I have some ideas now to face going back to a disheartening struggle ... I'll see what transpires ... though it may not be for a few days because of other comittments ... so any other good ideas MOST WELCOME!

    Struggling with spheres ...

I have done the almost-complete balls and cut much of the spigots off, and had done the wooden cups mentioned for each ... and not tried router mat but thought the thin rubber of inner tube would be much the same. As Richard said - these are bigger than the 35 mm max he suggests ... 95 mm or so...

    Struggling with spheres ...

Asked to make a set of skittles ... Making some balls turns out to be difficult ... I'm using a jig ... the Laymar Crafts pages advice (amongst others) seemed helpful ... Having started on the between-centres setup, all seems well ... but finishing not going well ... Made a wooden cup to...

    supanova v robert sorby chuck

I have both - one bought alone, one with a machine - both very good, little to choose between ... maybe tolerances on my supernova better because the lock/unlock hex socket works cleanly where the patriot I have to yank free many times ... they are much the same to me ...

    Beech - green inclusions

No - not flecks, whole areas ... seems as much a part of the wood as the lighter or browner areas ... I'll take a picture and get it uploaded ...

    Sorby Sandmaster problem

Has the shaft got badly worn? I had one where it ran hot and the shaft got very worn and the surface wasn't smooth but irregular - I replaced the pad and all was well again.

    Beech - green inclusions

Just turned a deep bowl (vase?) out of a bit of green (about 2 months old) beech (ends sealed within an hour of cutting). Its come out OK (not great) - but what suprises me is a dusting of green in the wood - not a bark inclusion or spalting - amongst the pale and medium browns. I've only used...

Advice on large chuck jaws please

My problem with these is getting it "centred" - until I shimmed the jaws with paper and decided the versachuck was single-use only I might not get the bowl flat so the base was in a single plane because the jaws weren't perfectly aligned on the supernova. Even now the rim might have warped...

    Skittles

I have been asked to make a set of skittles. I'm happy about turning them between centres - though whether they'll be symetrical I'm not sure! The balls will be much harder ... Anyone have any thoughts on choice of wood ... should they be light (sycamore, ash?) or heavier with something denser...

Advice on large chuck jaws please

I have the big axminster set on a versachuck and it works OK - have had to do some shimming with bits of paper to get the 4 faces flat - don't know if thats the chuck or the jaws though. Works OK if I'm careful

    Sealing, which way is best?

I had some porous surface sealer I'd used on spalded brickwork left over - and it seems to work OK (so far!), isn't expensive from B&Q and the like, and the brush is easy to wash in soap and water afterwards ...

How do I clean sanding sealer off brushes?

I use a brush - a 2 cms painting/decorating brush - which never dries out as it lives in the jar ... I cut the handle off square about 3cms from the base of the bristles and then fixed it into the centre of the inside of the jar lid (plastic screw-top, I think it had peanut butter in it once)...

    Hollowing tool

I got the little one and was very pleased with it - made some small-ish vases and it worked well ... though twists out of control when angled well away from the axis of the shaft ... I gather that you aren't meant to use it like that, although the mechanics allow. Liked it so much I got the...

    Bessey K Clamps

I wanted some cramps for a couple of projects - and after reading around a lot places like this forum and looking at some products in-the-steel ... I went for a 4 pack of K's from http://www.fixy.co.uk/products/department84.cfm as the best price I found. I'd been very impressed with the GH...
