Buying a bandsaw - Anglia Tool Centre OK?

Am going to take the plunge and splash out on the biggest bandsaw I can afford and can (hopefully) get into my basement workshop. Am looking to buy a Scheppach Basato 4. Hunting around the websites I find a lot of quotes around £680-£750 including delivery, a few below that, and one quite...

    Tormek cutting stupidly slow

I agree with the other enthusiasts of the Sorby - although you can (well I can) get blued steel if you aren't thinking ... but I use it for gouges and scrapers (shaping and sharpening) ... but although I have done the skew on it, I've found the Veritas Mk II and the scary-sharp papers a much...

    Deals and discounts at shows?

In the real world, in peoples experience rather than poster/flyer headlines, are there useful discounts and deals made at shows over and above what you'll find by half an hours internet searching? I've not been able to go south to Yandles, Westonbirt, Cressing, etc - so I'm wondering what people...

Record Power DVR-XP vs Hegner HDB200XL

You might want to look at the WivaMac's also - very good machines like the 175 I think - and might be easier to lug the individual pieces up your ladder one by one, rather than trying to winch up a whole lathe like the Vicmarc - certainly this was how I got my DB6000 down my basement stairs and...

    Fancy a new bowl gouge

By slowly collecting, and messing about trying to learn, I now have five ... two 1/2" and two 3/4", one of each with a long/shallow grind and another pair with a steeper/shallower grind (wings/bevel) ... and more recently acquired the fifth to try out a very steep/shallow grind for doing the...

    Buying a workbench

I have a Hoffmann & Hammer which is VERY solid and works well for me - I'd never have made anything that good on a Workmate ...

    Powercap or Aircap?

Just got a suprise box delivered - from the Toolpost - a replacement Powercap! Delighted ... until I find it's a "Powercap Lite", not a "Powercap Lite IP" ... the last two letters are critical ... this is a soft cap and a thin flexible visor that might work fine for dust but has no protection...

    Rutlands frame clamp

I used a strap clamp on picture/mirror frames with adequate results - often fiddly - then I came across the veritas frame clamp http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-4 ... on-set.asp and found it was so much better, much more controlled pressure and much less fiddly to use ... in fact I bought a...

    Waterstone sharpening station ideas wanted

I thought about spending a lot on diamond or waterstones - have a couple of cheap'n'cheerful diamonds which are useful - but tried out the basic scarey-sharp kit from Matthew as a low-level outlay ... and with a Veritas Mk II my planes and chisels have been fabulous ... if I was a full-time pro...

    Help with buying new jaws

I have found that, since I got a bigger lathe and was making things more than 8" diameter, that the jaws most often used on my Supernova/Patriot are the 75 mm bowl jaws and the 45 mm spigot jaws ... and the 130 mm jaws for the odd large platter ... haven't used the 50 mm jaws in a long time...

    woodturning sharpening systems - again

That looks something like the one I have - without the jigs obviously, and those little plastic shields are both broken off - striking difference is the lack of clamps on the base board ... without 2 Unikramps holding mine very firmly to the bench it tries to vibrate itself out of the workshop...

    woodturning sharpening systems - again

... and I meant to go on and say that, if I already had a decent grinder and decent wheel(s) I'd probably buy that ... but when I bought the Sorby all I had was a very cheap B&Q grinder with a cheap wheel that was good enough for sharpening a hatchet but not much more ...

    woodturning sharpening systems - again

I've also got the Sorby and am generally very pleased with it - but agree also that the TruGrind is very effective and not fiddly ...

    Supplies near Harrogate?

I would recomend a trip further east to Snainton (http://www.snaintonwoodworking.com/) infront of a trip to Boddies - only slightly further but a lot more interesting and much better value for me as a rule.

    Best lathe for bowl turning?

On that sort of a budget, I looked at the Nova and was quite disappointed - and others have mentioned more problems recently ... I also recomend you take a good look at the Vicmarks and the Wivamacs - I went for the latter and have been very pleased ...

    Powercap or Aircap?

Following recent posts, I e-mailed Peter at The Toolpost to ask if there was any progress with a repair. As typical, I got a rapid and detailed reply - service from there is first class. I hope he won't mind me quoting him here ... "Toby I still have your own Powercap here as I have refused...

    Powercap problems?

It is - very good WHEN it works ... but poor wiring loom connections mean it's had a loose connection and then died completely repeatedly - and very poor repair service (JSP - NOT the Tool[ost!).

    Powercap or Aircap?

Mentioned this in another thread. My Powercap Lite has broken repeatedly, and Peter at the Toolpost is struggling to get it repaired ... and it's not just mine ... very disappointed, as when its worked it has been great ... beware ...

    Powercap problems?

I have a Powercap Lite - and WHEN it's worked it's been a pleasure - comfy, effective, quiet and the additional advantage that I can stand up in my basement with it on - I couldn't use the Trend flipped up as there's not ceiling height. It is, however at the Toolpost again awaiting repair - and...

    4 bowls

"Rich tea" - yes, I've had some bits of that - pleased to realise this, as I thought it was just me being cack-handed ... it was that, but not just that ... perhaps ...
