Kitchen Knife Set - Recommendations Please?

Thank you all for the advice. So as per ABJ Temple’s first comment the general consensus is to avoid buying a set and get a couple of better knives for the money. In reality I could probably make do with just a decent pairing knife and bread knife. SWMBO would no doubt ask me where the other...

Kitchen Knife Set - Recommendations Please?

As the title suggests, I am looking to get myself a nice kitchen knife set, but don’t really know where to start. Ideally I don’t want to spend more than £200 for a set of around 5 kitchen knives, but would stretch that slightly for the right set. I do a lot of cooking with fresh ingredients...

As long as you have a fairly low shelf which is fixed in place to both side upper units then i wouldnt personally be too worried about the deflection of the side peices. As long as your joinery is robust (which it no doubt would be) then racking shouldnt be too much of an issue either. But i’ve...

You’ve got a point there. All you really need is to prevent the upper units from wanting to tip over from being top heavy, so all you really need are small/short steel plates with a screw/fixing to both upper and lower units, probably around these four locations to the rear... May not be...

WIP - A pair of computer monitor stands - sculpted Walnut legs and Yew top

I know, it is a shame to hide the grain, but I did purposely make the top boards slightly oversized to be able to atleast see some of the grain. I’Ll be interested to see how the top will age differently between the unexposed bit beneath the monitor base and the outer exposed bits of the Yew

It would be a shame to cut into the oak... but on the other hand a sliding dovetail would also help prevent the risk of the top bowing or warping. Otherwise, if you don’t want to penetrate the top face of the oak then you’d have to hide any fixing method of the top to bottom to the rear/wall...

You could always fix the bottom of the upper units to the oak with sliding dovetails? That would restrain the upper units and allow for the tangential expansion, but i would hope the longitudinal expansion would be minimal? The differential expansion of the two different materials along the...

WIP - A pair of computer monitor stands - sculpted Walnut legs and Yew top

Thanks Bm101. Work’s been pretty nuts/stressful recently, so having something nice to look at now and again and a reminder of my life outside of work will hopefully keep me ploughing on when under pressure.

As promised, here they are in their new home 😁 Also, in case you wondered, my work desk is usually a lot messier with paper strewn across it in what i call organised chaos... but for the purposes of the photo (and for confidentiality) i had the pile of paperwork on my lap 😆

Thanks all for the kind words. I’m pleased with how it turned out. Once i’m set up in the office tomorrow i’m sure i’ll be turning down requests to make more of them 😁. Does help having nice wood though

WIP - A pair of computer monitor stands - sculpted Walnut legs and Yew top

After a manic few months of being the busiest i’ve ever been at work i’ve finally had a little over a week off work. So i decided to make myself a pair of computer monitor stands as both (non adjustable) monitors i use in work are too low and a stack of paper under each wasnt cutting it, so just...

My wood lathe chuck key is much too short for turning larger items, or when using the cole jaws, so decided to get some metal lathe practice and made a new longer chuck key. I know brass isnt the most durable of materials for this purpose, but it should hold up fine.

Where to buy wide belt sander abrasives individually?

That’s very generous of you to offer to do the facilitating. I’m sure you’ll find people for the Sorby proedge size belts, but I don’t know how many people would want any of the larger wide belts I’m hoping for? I plan to use them to make a large abrasive surface for flattening tops of boxes...

Where to buy wide belt sander abrasives individually?

As per the title, I would like to buy a couple of different grit wide belt sander abrasives. These aren’t cheap and seem to only be sold in multiples of 10, but i only want a couple. Does anyone have a source where I could buy individual belts from which are ideally around 600mm wide?

Calling all entomologist - i hope these aren't wood borers

Panicking a little bit now. I grabbed a piece of ash from my wood storage in the workshop which was near enough stored against the wall, to find a few of these little beetle bug looking things crawling over the surface against the wall. I cant see any bug holes, but worried that these are some...
