    Cut Resistant Gloves

I imagine gloves would protect against minor nicks and cuts through lapses in care handling tools. I have list count of the number of times I've nicked a finger on the corner of a shoulder plane through lack of care handling. I guess it would reduce bloodshed when beginners are using knives...

    Cut Resistant Gloves

Our green wood working group got in some kevlar cut resistant gloves. One of the more experienced guys took one, put it on a block, and sliced one on the fingers off with ease using a spoon carving knife, and declared them worse than useless. Interesting isn't it, that here we are all saying...

Advice on replacing raised beds in the garden

I tend to agree with Mike. I can think of three good reasons for raised beds - overcoming the gardener's physical limitations (e.g., bad back), waterlogging, and irrecoverably poor or contaminated soil. Maybe you could add aesthetics ? There are also bad reasons, principally because all the...

    Grooving

I did that, with outdoor ply from Wickes, a clamped on guide like Mike's, but with a v bit in a router. It is under an overhanging roof (about a foot if overhang) so somewhat sheltered - but it has neither splintered or delaminated yet. It has been there 15 years. Not that I'd necessarily do...

    Coffee 'Taple'

If we were a young crowd, we'd have no idea what the hell that was meant to be ! ;)

Huge Ken Hawley archive of Sheffield Toolmaking

That should help a few hours slip by ! I look forward to the auger and gimlet forging. I bought stuff from Ken Hawley's shop in Sheffield as a teenager. My dad loved the "We sell nowt but tools" tag line.

    email address and hosting

I use HostPresto, £24 for nano hosting, £12 for a .com domain, plus VAT = almost exactly the same. Support has been good on the few occasions I've needed it. There are ethical objections to GoDaddy - to do with CEOs shooting elephant.

    Veritas Carpenters Gauge alternative

The " Finger gauge" as my school woodwork teacher called it. Works pretty well.

    Steam bending question

A day seems the usual advice. As it is the heat that softens the wood, not the water, I assume in needs to cool, but not necessarily dry.

    my virginmedia contract ends shortly

+1. You will end up with a huge task to switch. Or e.g., paying TalkTalk £50 per year to keep them. Also ... e-mail security is a nightmare. Imagine you give up an e-mail address; either from an ISP, or by allowing your own domain name to lapse. You had better have changed all your e-mail...

    Longer self edit time?

Sorry, I didn't mean I have a thread I need to go back and edit at the moment, just to mention a reason I've in the past needed to do it. It is also sometimes nice to go back and hide all my typos :sneaky:

    Longer self edit time?

Obviously sometimes users will need to go back and edit their old posts, or there woukd be no photos from me, or more importantly AndyT, and probably many others who have had to change photo hosting site at some time and went through the significant chore of updating all the links !

    Finish for kitchen knife handle

I rehandled a similar knife with wild plum. Gave it a few wipes over with walnut oil. Nothing more. Still good a few years later. It gets topped up with oil and grease in normal use

    Face masks

If you want to get the naximum people vaccinated, they seem to have it wrong. Forget societal pressure, family, embarrassment etc. People influenced like that will go for the vaccine anyway. Tell people (true or not) once you're vaccinated that's you ok to take off your mask and do exactly...

    Face masks

Just because masks may not meet the standards required to protect healthcare workers when working with possibly / probably infectious people in no way means that there is no advantage in using them or similar masks for a modicum of protection for yourself and others in more ordinary situations...

    Face masks

It was a major enough threat to both my mother and aunt, who it killed. Not lost a relative yet ? Think yourself lucky. Agree with Mike about vaccination. Compulsory would produce a counterproductive backlash. More likely, you will find you won't be let into other countries without proof of...

    Face masks

Its based mostly on evidence it will benefit others, which seems to be widely agreed. It might also benefit the wearer directly. It has little downside, provided you dispose of them properly. What is it some people are getting so heated about ? It's no more an infringement of your freedom...

    Whittling knife and axe advice

Absolutely, if it is hand forged the eye is formed by knocking a drift in from both sides, so it can't really end up otherwise.

    Whittling knife and axe advice

I know you said you wanted an ordinary knife, but I'll just mention the Flexcut carving knife as being useful for small things. And locking. Which is safest for your fingers but use some sense where you carry it. Robin Wood used to recommend a smaller Gransfors axe before he started peddaling...
