    Wind fall Wood

Yes, but you don't become the owner of it - it still belongs to the landowner / owner of the tree. It is amazing at this time of year just how much wishful thinking goes into why it might be reasonable to appropriate wood. I always say, think "Is there a good reason that should be mine ?" and if...

Cutting a groove in brass rod?

Seems like a strange way to me. I would have thought starting at the end furthest from the chuck, and making successive (slow, light) cuts would mean you are never putting the torque through a 3mm bit of rod instead of the full 6mm ? But I'm not a machinist.

advice on neighbours smoke from chimney issue

Depends if you want to resolve the problem, or create a dispute. It may be an amicable solution isn't possible, but it is usually the best option if available. You could check the flue terminal location complies (or not) with part J of the building regs. The more likely problem is what he is...

Cutting a groove in brass rod?

By across I take it you mean across the water in the USA. Here its a housing. A dado is the bottom bit of a wall. Oh how MikeG will be missed ;) I was assuming he mean a groove around the rod, not along it ? It would better explain why the first go snapped off.

    Drilling with clean exit holes.

A nice thought, doing them in a stack, but if the sheet is large enough to prohibit using a pillar drill, watch out for the degradation in accuracy down the stack if the drill isn't perfectly square to the work.

    draw knife

It is a shame that the current circumstances make it even harder to try before you buy. A lot of personal taste involved. I tried a new Crown drawknife and disliked it, clumsy feeling thing, engineered rather than forged. I have 3, a Ward Sheffield made one, an American one, and a French type...

    Tool ID

The second line is SHEFFIELD ENGLAND, but I guess that's not much help.

What variety of trade would be able to fix this?

They often crack through damp storage. The wood swells and splits the ferrule. The ferrules fixed by punching a divot in the ferrule will usually split there. Brass tube is fine, though you need to de-burr it well if you use pipe cutters on it.

    How to bore/drill a 350mm long / 27 diamm hole

Is this into end grain ? That's always hard work with an auger, but a Gedge pattern is the one of choice. If I want a hole through the middle of something I'm turning on a pole lathe where it isn't possible to bore it on the lathe, I will bore a hole first, turn a couple of plugs for the ends...

    Record plane restoration

It depends on your aesthetic sensibilities. I find pleasing to the eye a plane that is a bit tarnished, odd chips to the paintwork and signs of use on the handles. One that looks well used but loved. A plane that is bling shiny, with a crisp fresh paint job, essentially looking like a new one...

    Steam bending strap alternative options?

I thought the purpose of the bending strap is different to, say, a board with pegs or a former. It's to ensure the inside of the curve is compressed without stretching and tearing the fibres on the outside. Somewhere at work we had some rolls of stainless steel band that looked perfect for the...

Kitchen Knife Set - Recommendations Please?

Looking at Sheffield Knives, I'm left feeling disappointed. Looks like the blades are not forged, but just cut from sheet stock. Not to say they won't work well like that, but looks cheap to me. Of the Richardson knives, I think the 1839 range are the only ones which actually say they are...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

Does this acid trick really work ? It sounds like wishful thinking to me. I would have thought it more likely to remove sharp edges than otherwise. Some of the metalwork we have made has an acid etch to reduce machining marks. But maybe intuition doesn't apply here. Does anyone actually do it ?

Kitchen Knife Set - Recommendations Please?

I wouldn't put anything I cherished through a dishwasher. Just to mention you can still get Sheffield made knives - Richardson 1839 range. I use some older Richardson knives, sharpened with the kit I use for everything else - wet grinder and oilstone.

    Bleaching Wood

I have used the 2 pack sodium hydroxide / hydrogen peroxide bleach. It was very effective at achieving a bleached driftwood look quite quickly. Quite aggressive. I can't imagine I would have the skill to make it blend in with the sunbleached parts. More likely I'd end up with a whiteish patch...
