    Broad Axe recommendations

I haven't done any heavy hewing, but have watched it done, and it does look as though - as with most types of axe these days - the choice is between an old one (British, American, French, Austrian ...) or a Swedish new one. But good old British ones are rare and expensive. Timeless Tools are...

    Bookcase door

I was not so much thinking of being nervous enough to want a panic room, but being panicky enough to to wear tracks in the floor by using it so often ! But as a kid's den - a secret room, how exciting.

Only a problem if you are of very nervous disposition

    Millers Falls cigar shave

I forgot to update this one. With a shallower bevel, it seems to take a nice delicate shaving. I am not completely certain on the correct positioning of the cutter - Pete's looks like there might be a slightly greater clearance than I have set mine. I haven't yet used it in anger ...

    Clifton iorns in old planes

As well as the mouth widening and longer yoke, the lever cap screw is left hanging on by not that many turns of thread into the frog, and it is easy to strip the thread from the frog. DAMHIKT. I settled for the very thin Stanley iron that came with my Record #6, but with the Clifton two piece...

    Japanese saws

I watched some demos of ripping with a two man pit saw (modern one, a special from Thomas Flinn) against a Japanese Maebiki. The latter seemed much the easier way. Part of the problem for the pit saw, to be fair, was that rather than a pit, they had a wobbly scaffold tower, which I am sure...

    Hand brace for hexagonal shank

DIeter Schmidt sells fairly cheap adaptors: https://www.fine-tools.com/bohr1.html I haven't used one to know if it is up to boring larger holes though. Older brace chucks I find don't grip parallel shanks all that well, the later Stanley types work a bit better.

    How To Edge Joint

Good tip, found this the hard way glueing up some oak door panels. All that effort to get a super good joint, and it had thin black dashes where the glue touched the clamps #-o

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

Perfectly legal does not necessarily imply acceptable in a music venue, I suspect. I do use a couple of locking knives, on a "Swisstool" multitool, and a flexcut carving jack. They are much safer for the user. I suppose the reason they are prohibited is that they are also safer to the user...

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

I too got only an automated response from my reality TV "star" MP. I've also e-mailed the HCA (Heritage Crafts Association) and am told Robin Wood is on to it - as a woodworker and seller of tools mail-order, I guess it rather matters to him. It will b****r up a lot of heritage crafts that...

    How To Edge Joint

This is what I was taught to do at school - and with thin boards at least, it seems easier to plane square when they are doubled up. But I guess with thick boards and a cambered iron, the effect of the camber becomes less useful ?

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

Ah yes, it doesn't apply to delivery to business adresses, so trade are OK, hobbyists and DIYers on the other hand might still have a problem. Of course, government don't care a lot about hobbyists and DIYers - people doing something for themselves doesn't create employment or bring in tax...

Lathe trips Consumer unit, any ideas why?

So which of the trips in the picture is going ? The RCD (with test button) or MCB? Our VAX tripped the RCD, was due to failed capacitors in the EMI suppression filter. As the machine said 2kW on it, but the filter said 6A max, it is probably not surprising that it is a common fault.

    pet hates

Testing the smoke detector. When I saw Phil's photo and the comment about things not doing what they were designed for, I assumed he meant the toaster ! Pet rant coming up ... Why are toasters so c**p ? They rely on a timer or other guestimation method to determine when the toast is done...

    Oil stone refurb

I've never tried soapy water. For me, removing an oily gunky mess is a job for an organic solvent - parafin worked very nicely for me. Better than expected; my slipstones looked like new.

Making an external door from MDF

Since 2015. Part Q, Appendix B - Bespoke timber secure doorsets. Should be manufactures from solid or laminated timber of density at least 600 kg/cubic metre. Also specifies minimum thickness for panels, width of stiles, width of panels, locking, letterplates etc. Applies to garage doors too...

Making an external door from MDF

I think that replacing an exterior door comes under the auspices of building regs, if that worries you. For a wooden door, there is a minimum density specified that implies hardwood, Iroko is just OK. I struggle to imagine how bad a door - or anything else for that matter - would need to be...

    Hobbyist woodwork need help!

The most discouraging thing for me about getting on with it and making some actual furniture, is that a quick look around the shops seems to suggest that making wood into furniture actually devalues it quite a lot. Most of the things I've made, I could have bought an adequate alternative ready...
