    Jigsaw tearout

I've used blades that cut cleanly on both strokes, with great success, just with a basic Black & Decker jig saw. Its the blade that counts, get the correct one for the job, and change it as needed. Bod

John Moseley & son London (Marples) Jack Plane

I've just been given a wooden plane, normal jack size, stamped John Mosley & son London, it has a Marples Hibernia iron fitted. The blade has never been sharpened, indeed still has what looks like the factory grease preventing rust. The body, tells the story, taken from the box and used, gouged...

    Cordless drill/driver

Look out for deals. Its often as cheap to buy a new drill with 2 batteries, as to buy just the batteries on their own! Having the old ones recelled is often no cheaper than new. Bod

    Very small Workbench

Are you right handed? If so the vice should be to the right of the left leg. (Move/leave out dog holes in that area) Fixing the top, dowels, and screws from underneath. Bod

    Record 145/6 Holdfasts

"But as I said, mine are almost always IN THE WRONG PLACE for this task " I feel this is the weakness of the holdfast system, collars are most times in the wrong place, but "blacksmith" ones, are too easy to put a new hole where its needed for this job. Resulting in a Swiss Cheese bench...

    Record 145/6 Holdfasts

My first 145 used to tilt slightly under pressure, but I put that down to having a plywood bench. The new bench is 1 3/4 inch pine (X joists) so I'm hoping with a tight fit to have no movement, but the age old question, where to put them? Previously it was fitted to clamp down on the bench hook...

    PM help required

Thanks, I shall have patience then. Don't know why, I was expecting it to be like E-Mail, press "send" to make it go. Bod

    PM help required

How do I get a message in my outbox of the PM system to actually go? I have two messages to go, but no matter what I do, they are just sitting there, and haven't appeared in the sent box. Bod

    Record 145/6 Holdfasts

Does anyone have experience of using a Record 145 holdfast in a 146 collar? I have 2 145s, but only 1 collar, however I have 3 146 collars (1 x Record 23mm dia. 2 x Axminster 25mm dia.) I cannot find a supply of the smaller collars, the larger is not a problem. The 145 has 19mm dia. stem. 146...

    Bow saw baldes.

Might be worth asking in a proper old fashioned ironmongers. The type where the owner/assistant wears a brown dust coat, and knows to ask if the "widget" is left or right handed! Bod

Ideal saw for cutting thick table legs to length & square

That saw in the 2nd photo, is worth having a better look at. It may well be all it needs is a good sharpen & set, or a retooth, to be a "good-un" Bod

    work bench question

Welcome. A couple of questions, are you right or left handed? Could the front of the bench be level with the door frame? I've had a problem in the past with a small shed, overcome by having any long pieces in the vice, sticking out through the open door! 4 or 6 legs, remember the legs do not...

Tuffsaw bandsaw blades a bit long.

To measure a band saw blade length. Remove blade, tie a short length of cotton/string around the blade, in a tooth gullet. Measure from string to string using a long enough measure. Repeat measurement at least twice. The cotton/string gives a definite starting point, and a fixed end. Using...

    Skarsten scrapers

A little information here, skarsten-scraper-blades-t75329.html There was a sharpening jig made, might be worth asking in a older ironmongers shop. Bod

    traditional carpenters toolbox

Having made several tool boxes, for the kids, when they got their own homes, saves the "Dad, can I borrow...." My advice, gather all the tools expected to go in, together. Make the box big enough to hold the largest. Cutting as little as 3/4 of an inch off a panel saw makes it look and feel...

    Large Glue pots.

Are large glue pots still used? 2-3 pint capacity, Pearl/Hide glue. I've just aquired one, and am unsure what to do with it, leave to gather dust/put a plant in it, as I'm a user of PVA. Don't want to scrap it, it's too good for that. Bod
