    New oak table

Looks excellent. Tell us more about the finish. And I would love to know how you joined the top boards together. Andy

    how flat?

Hard to say really, i'm sure that 'rules of thumb' will come into this one. In my experiance the warping has happened straight off the saw. I usually leave the items overnight and then plane them the next day. I haven't had any items warping further - touch wood - . Andy

    how flat?

Digizz, From what your saying it sound like the wood has destressed when you cut it down to size. I don't think you should see much more movement, unless your work shop is particulary wet or dry. If your joining several boards to make the top then joining them now will help reduce the warping as...

    MDF Wall Paneling

I would paint it to protect it and build a good structure to hold it up. If you have any problems later on with damp etc ( which you shouldn't) you can unscrew it and replace is with osb later - It's free give it a go. Mdf at 25mm thick will have a good strength for hanging things - even if you...

    Does The Team Think?

I would be quite happy for my drivel to be printed - no need to ask permission Pete. I think if you type your pearls of wisdom in here then you are already putting it into the public domain. I suppose you could say that if you don't want people to read it then don't write it.. Just my...

    pine floor

I don’t think you will be able to glue it as there is no way of holding the joints together. The idea of hidden nailing is to set the plank into its T&G and nail the opposite side holding the joint together. If you glue the joint and don't nail, you have no way of holding the joint together. If...

    pine floor

If its t & g flooring then is should be hidden nailed but you have to have something to nail too. If you lay a ply floor first the nails will have to be relatively short otherwise you will nail into the concrete. You may have to lay down 25 x 25mm batons at say 400 ctrs then nail into the...

    cutting mirror glass

I visited a glass shop last year and was shown how to cut glass. There is a trick to it. One score line only, using firm pressure all the way. The noise the cutter makes is very distinctive, sort of a zing. If it doesn't zing it won't break correctly. If it doesn't zing then your aren't...

    Problems - Fresh sawn wood

Hello all, Well firstly the wood is kiln dried and has been sitting in the timber warehouse for the best part of a year, it's as dry as it will ever be. So I have to put it down to internal stressing. Leaving the pieces over night under weights has resolved about half the bow. I planned the...

    Problems - Fresh sawn wood

Nae bad mike, Are you from anywhere in Scotland I might know? I have the timber under weights at the moment, hopefully it will reduce the bowing and reduce the amount of planning required. I would normally leave the wood to stand for as long as practically possible but as the cabinets are made...

    Problems - Fresh sawn wood

The timber is very low moisture content. Because the banana happened as it came off the saw I'm thinking it must have been stressed within the wood. I'm going to try cutting the larger sections and resize after a week sitting on the under floor heating and if the doesn't work I'll just have to...

    Problems - Fresh sawn wood

I am about to make up some cabinet doors and bought some rough saw oak to resize, I cut the plank to 640mm long and ran it through the planner thicknesser to square it. I then ripped it down the middle producing to pieces of 70 wide x 50thk x 640 long, I then ripped them down the middle to...

    tapering jig........

I made a similar jig at the weekend and suffered the same problems. The wood tended to follow the saw. The problem was that I had the jig fixed to the fence and I was sliding the wood along the jig. I will now try moving the jig and wood along the fence -makes sense, why did I think of it...

    Sawblades

Thanks john and jeff. Looks like some searching for trend and freud is required £64 seems a good price Problem with the old blade was that the resistance feedback from the wood, as it passes through the blade, was increasing to a point where the blade now heat up and bends causing a bad cut...
