    table design

Thanks for sketching that up for me, was it in sketch up? The sides were going to be solid all the way across with wooden runners rather than legs like in you drawing, but now that I have seen it with legs I’m not so sure, the solid sides could possibly look too substantial and imposing where as...

    table design

Finally I have managed to compress the photo enough to attach it! I was more worried about the table top splintering off above and below the dowels rather that the dowels coming loose and I think I will need something to stop the legs moving apart at the bottom so a hidden rail will be needed?

    table design

Hello all. I was wondering if someone had a solution to a design problem. I have recently designed a coffee table but have designed weaknesses into it. So the design is: 40mm thick sides and top joined together by 20mm wooden dowels through the side and into the top with a 20mm gap between the...

Hello all. Can someone suggest a pillar/worktop drill. That could double up as an occasional mortise or is this not really practical. What should I consider when thinking about the drill? Many thanks

    table saw fence

Yes it’s the 1332 with a sliding table, and yes I also move the fence towards the blade rather than away from it, but what I really want to know about is the incra system over kill, the pros obviously get away with not shelling out for it so are standard fences accurate enough? thanks for your...

    table saw fence

Hello all. I would like to get your comments and opinions. I have a 10” SIP saw and have been struggling with the fence for years which is never square despite spending hours trying re-adjusting it, it is sometimes more out than others despite cleaning and waxing the ends. As a result of my...

    clamps

Hello all. Can someone recommend a good quality clamp that doesn’t cost the earth. I brought eight Axminster F clamps about a year ago and the one thing you can guarantee with them is that if they are working to start with they soon won’t be, mind you the build quality is good, I have thrown...

    wood movement

Thanks every one. I was never the most patient of people though I did store the wood for a couple of months before starting the project though the timber on the bottom had been seasoning for around 3 years and the stuff on top only 12 months. I don’t thing pulling it all apart is an option as...

    wood movement

Hello all. Please can someone advise me. I have been building myself a new work bench, one that will hopefully last for at least my lifetime. The top is constructed out of two layers of 25mm Beech, the first layer is made up of 5’ boards and the top layer are around 7’ so they over lap, the...

    work bench

Thanks everyone for the advice, I didn’t think I would get a reply until tomorrow. You know it’s a funny thing being Dyslexic – it’s only a disability if I let it and it has made me some good friends as I find my mistakes as funny as them. :D I thought the beech may be a bit weaker, it’s a bit...

    work bench

Can someone advise me – I am making a new woodworking bench as my old one isn’t up to scratch and wobbles all over the place. I plan to make a bench based on Garrett Hacks, found on the fine woodworking website. I am, at present, an amateur hobbits looking to develop my skills with an eye to...

    which make, Dakota/other?

Hello all. I am developing my tool collection at the mo and read a positive article about Quangsheng Block Plane, distributed through workshop heaven. The block plain looks exactly the same as a Dakota block plane from Rutland but £10 cheaper. Does anyone have any experience with either make or...

    morticing

Many thanks everyone, just turned on my computer to be welcomed to all your comments. Just to respond to woodbloke’s comments about time and faffing around, I am the world’s best faffer in my workshop (garage) I can spend hours up there just standing around thinking to myself ‘well isn’t this...

    morticing

Hello all. Please can someone help; my woodworking has moved on in recent years, mostly form learning from my mistakes, and I would like to make window frames, chairs etc so will inevitably need to do a bit of mortising though not every day. Should I get a morticer such as the Axminster AW16BMST...

    hand plain

Thanks everyone. Sorry I meant book case, so the sides will be 8ft long, not the shelf’s, I love the sagulator, never come across it before, almost as comical as some of the modern Welsh words that have recently been invented like sboncen (table tennis), sounds very funny spoken. Thanks catface...
