    Is this fixable

Drill out the dowels from the outer edge of the rail, then fit longer new dowels. Or, Carefully saw through the dowels leaving them flush with adjoining surfaces and drill the rail as above. In both cases if the exposed dowel end is disliked, fit a grain matched slip of wood into the rail to...

Can sketchup pull, swivel on an axi

Not Sketchup, but I have found this useful for similar tasks. http://blog.rectorsquid.com/linkage-mec ... simulator/ A free program to allow linkages to be drawn, and activated. It needs some time to learn how to use it but is worth the effort. xy

An alternative way to cut big threads in wood

Hi Andy, add me to the list of those with an interest in thread cutting in wood. I'm just not as good at getting off my backside to do anything as some of you guys. I was particularly taken by the use of a 'single tooth' half-nut by Derek in this thread.bench-in-a-weekend-t78328.html. Images...

"Men in Sheds" - The Luthier

Absolutely delightful. It is always a great experience to be in the presence of someone so immersed in his, or her, passion. That 30 minutes passed in a flash. xy

Secretaire campaign chest - now finished

That looks beautiful Mark. Thank you for posting all the details. I am particularly pleased that you are happy with it, that suggests some satisfaction with your work. Rightly so! As others have said maintaining a flow while doing a WIP must be very difficult. xy

Nicely done Mick. I like the 'let's get this sorted attitude' to the problem with the guards. xy

    Panel/Worktop Making

Cascamite in glass jars. If you put a plastic bag in the jar first, and fill that. Then the spare can be twisted down and a twizzle used to fasten the top of the bag. Don't forget to write on the jar. Good idea to add the date. T&G's don't half use a lot of wood, think 12mm per joint. xy

    Bench in a weekend

You always come up with something interesting Derek, thank you. I do like the way you have managed the 'female' thread. I have not come across that before, is it your own? Then of course I remember Hero's thread cutting solution, and every quick release half nut I have ever seen. Of course like...

    Wood transfer advice

Hi, I was looking forward to seeing answers to this question. As there have been non I'll throw my ramblings in. From a production point of view the longest job will be positioning the various elements, however they are made. To get around that the whole of the surface, clock face above...

    Help needed with stool design

Hi Mick, My Windsor was made in deepest Charente, I was the noisiest thing around. I would have preferred more time and a little more timber. Still a great learning experience. I have since changed the front legs to an elongated rugby ball shape, it does look better but the leg front leg plane...

    Help needed with stool design

Hi Mick, I appreciate your thoughts, thanks. An 'X' type stretcher? It takes me long enough to actually start something anyway. That would take a lot of thinking about, and might delay me even more. Could you point me at an image please? I made a tapered mortice device, after reading about...

    Help needed with stool design

Thanks for the response Mick. The 'sight line' splay angle actually worked out at 14.5 degrees, the angle in the leg plane will be less. There of course is the snag, with the foot end of the leg outboard of the seat, for stability, as the tenon is moved inwards, the splay angle becomes greater...

    Aa excellent Sketchup learning resource.

Hello all. I do not work with Sketchup very often and tend to find my way around by stumbling and shear luck. However I recently drew a Stool, see my request for design help, help-needed-with-stool-design-t78120.html, and just could not angle the legs correctly. A visit to...

    Help needed with stool design

Hi all, I am on the verge of making a stool similar to the one shown. Just in case the dimensions are not readable. The top/seat is 330mm x 220mm. with a thickness of 30mm. Height is 334mm. My problem is the distance of the leg holes from the edges of the top. As shown the legs are 35mm from...

Windows XP's demise - sits back; opens popcorn

Eric, I agree with all you have said, especially "wilful ignorance is indeed shameful". However some of the posts in this thread appear to suggest that the installation of a Linux operating system is straight forward. For some, perhaps many, it will be. For some it will verge on a nightmare. xy
