    Drilling Hardened Steel

There have been a number of posts, sometime in history, about using bandsaw blades in frame saws. The problem of drilling fastening holes in the hardened steel has been tackled by annealing the steel before drilling. Some had success doing this by running a steel shaft, in a pillar drill...

    Hinges in mdf

I have done exactly the same, then decided to organise a burr/nick in othe edge of the entry hole. That puts a nice groove down the dowel. A little bit less fidly than using some cutting device. HTH. geoff

    Your Favourite Tape Measure(s)

If the readings of length vary when the tape is used hooked over an edge, or butted against an inner corner surface. The variation can be altered, corrected, by changing the hook. The inner corner measurement is the basic tape reading, altering the angle of the tab will take into account the...

    LED lighting advice for carving?

Of course just when I decide not to keep a record of every source of information I have used, I need one. I am trying to start more carvings on a small scale. Lighting can be a problem. Here is where I could do with a link to offer, sadly not. Part of my research, OK web browsing, led me to...

Einhell sc sb 200 or burgess BK3 plus

I have a Burgess BBS20, it is not a workhorse. However I have successfully sliced 75mm Utile, 28mm Oak, and50mm Sycamore down to 3mm, all in the region of 750mm lengths. In all cases it took time and patience. All the cuts needed planing to a finish. Within reason a long cut can be made with a...

Pop quiz, spot what the issue is... and the fix

Those flat bits are very useful. Want a small tapered hole, re-file a flat bit, need an odd sized hole, re-file a flat bit. I have converted a flat bit to a tap in the past, not a quick job but quicker than trying to find a suitable tap, and much cheaper for a job of one or two threaded holes...

Pop quiz, spot what the issue is... and the fix

Did you 'sharpen' the rear end, shoulders, of the flat bit? Passing that through the sleeve in the hole before chucking in the drill. It would be tempting to assume a need to dun the drill backwards, but the bit could be sharpened to cut when run in reverse. gf

Profiled steel for workshop roof and wall cladding

That is terrific Hornbeam. One of my 'to do' list jobs is to have the garage roof done. My main concern was the durability of the coating as we do like to feed birds up there. I am concerned about the possibilty of scratches going throug the coating. Now I have searching questions to ask...

    Old Bandsaw Blade Uses.

It is very easy to forget just how thin, and flexible, the web in the middle of a twist drill is. Especially on drills of 6mm or less. I must remember to save broken bits, although the day they get reground is likely to be the day after yours. Hey, hey. geoff
