    Dewalt 712

Yes, unfortunately it was more to do with my stupidity I'm afraid, I was expecting a slightly more accurate hole and maybe a tightening screw or something to hold it in place. However it seems you drop the main bar into the hole and then rotate it 180 degrees to lock it in place (and I'm using...

    Dewalt 712

I've just bought a DW712 , love the saw, however I also wanted a work piece hold down for it as well so I bought one of these: ebay link Problem is, despite the fact it says it is compatable with the DW712 it doesn't seem to be a vertical hold down, more of a stop to butt work up...

electric nail guns (worth it or not)

I have the tacwise 500EL Pro, cost me about 70 GBP, I bought it as a bit of a compromise when I was laying an Oak floor in my lounge. I have to say I was concerned it would not be up to the job, but in fairness it has been excellent. It never flinched once when secret nailing into 18mm Oak...

    Hidden Nailers

Can I just add a rider to this, I'm in a similar situation to David, I have about 30m of Oak flooring to lay, although I have no desire to buy a proper secret nailer and hiring seems to be ridiculously priced, plus I have a lot of tight spaces to board were you can't really swing a hammer...

    Garage conversion

Hi, I'm in the middle of converting my garage to a workshop and my attention has just turned to the roof, at the moment it's just bare joists so in a bid to make it airtight and warm I'm planning to put isolation between the joist and then cover it in a layer of thick plastic to seal it and...

    Recycling wood shavings

I was just about to wonder down the tip today with a few bags of wood shavings from the latest project when I started thinking about recycling, and whether or not I could use them on the compose heap. Has anyone tried this? Do they rot down fast enough or do they just make a mess of otherwise...

    Straight talking

Cheers for all the advice. Have been trying to hollow it out and the results are getting much better thanks, not perfect but heading in the right direction. Of course now it's not square, so after some wondering plane action I get it square and then it's not flat anymore etc etc etc, oh the joys...

    Straight talking

Hey guys, Once again it's stupid question time, but if you don't ask the stupid questions you just end up doing stupid things. So my hand tool adventure continues, I'm now pretty happy with my plane blades, so I thought I'd move on and do some slightly more advanced planing, first stop I...

    Linseed oil

I was considering Linseed oil to finish my deck with (yellow Balau), although now I read this, especially considering the fickle nature of our weather and the drying time I'm wondering if there are and better alternatives. Any suggestions?

    Deck Finishing

Hi Guys, Wonder if you can give me a bit of advice, after much hard work and a fair bit of swearing I've finally finished my deck project. It's made from yellow balau and once completed I finished it off with ronseal clear deck sealer. When it was done it looked fabulous, however after just a...

    DIRE WARNING!

Hmmmm considering the same web site has a story claiming that the Japanese mafia used KGB inventions to cause hurricane Katrina I'm not entirely sure this is the most accurately reported story. Great website though, it's certainly got my office laughing.

Those splendid folks at Lee Valley...

Funny you should mention that, my friend has just returned from the states carrying a very fine Large shoulder plane from Lie Nielsen, I ordered it on line to be delivered to her hotel and after a couple of cock ups from yours truely, the guys at LN bent over backwards to sort everything out...

    Stubborn Varnish

Cheers for the help guys, purchased some paint stripper and some shellac and with a little bit of messing around and some furious sanding the handles are now coming up an absolute treat! Thanks again, much appreciated. Now I have to get those bases flat, can't wait for that, hmmmmm.

    Stubborn Varnish

Not sure if this is exactly the right area for this question but here goes anyway. Wonder if anyone can help me out, I have a few planes now that I'm trying to tune/fettle/do up and generally try to make them look nice. They all have nice rosewood handles but are covered in some god awful...

    Thicknesser vertical gauge

Looks like a tidy piece of kit that. Out of interest, where did you get the thicknesser? Did you get it in the UK or ship it over from the US?

    Not too shiny sharpening.

Wow, seems like I've started a bit of a debate here, but thanks for all your replies, although I'm still not sure if I'm any closer to an answer. However, help arrived last weekend in the form of DC's sharpening DVD and it did make some very interesting viewing, plus I was a little sickened at...

    Not too shiny sharpening.

The stones are kept perfectly flat, I've got a nice large extra course DMT diamond stone to do that. I flatten them every couple of minutes, especially the low grits which do wear very quickly.

    Not too shiny sharpening.

Wonder if anyone can help me, I've recently purchased a hock blade for my No7, plus a couple of LN planes (All A2 blades). I've been reading the DC books as well so I thought I'd get myself some waterstones to sharpen them up on. So a quick call to Axminster and I am now the proud owner of 250...

    New Zealand Compatibility

My family moved out there 8 years ago (no idea why I didn't go to be honest) and my Dads powertools are all still working fine. Don't think he's changed the plugs he just uses adapters. As for the place it is fantastic, I go out every year or so and have a great time.
