Finish for oak kitchen table top?

Greetings, Most "Tung Oil" is actually a mixture of Tung Oil and some sort of varnish or hardener/drying agent - and it's the latter that are toxic. Pure Tung Oil (as sold by Liberon) is utterly food safe and is recommended for food preparation areas (and smells much nicer too).

    Screwfix ??

Greetings, This has been in the business sections of several papers recently (including the Telegraph) - they have had trouble recruiting enough staff for the new warehouse (in/near Stoke IIRC) and such a backlog of orders built up that they decided to stop taking new orders until the backlog...

Thumbs up Axminster - Bog Off Rutlands :-)

Greetings, As some of you may know from perusing the "other" site, I was recently in the market for a workshop air filtration system, and the chosen model was the Axminster (re-badged Jet) AFS1000B. When I originally tried to order this from Axminster they told me they no longer stocked it and...

    Ordering Direct from Lee Valley

Greetings, As Adam suggested, I went with the surface mail option - not in a massive hurry as after this weekend I'm back in Switzerland for the next 4 weeks and won't be shipping the workshop over to Switzerland until a few weeks after then :-( Means it'll be getting very cold outside just as...

    Ordering Direct from Lee Valley

Greetings, I'm thinking about buying the LV Scraper Plane, Low Angle Jack Plane and Medium Shoulder Plane. BriMarc currently don't have the LA Jack, and don't know when they'll get any more. Has anybody ever ordered directly from LV website in Canada ? if so - any problems either with...

    Choosing wood?

Digizz, You can't really go on photos on webites or in magazines or books as you don't generally know how finely they've been sanded, whether it's heartwood or not, and whether a light finish has been appliced or not. Best solution is to go to a timber merchants, buy a small roughcut of as...

Tung Oil - Am I doing anything daft?

Martin, I really like Liberon Pure Tung Oil (PTO) for a lot of furniture, but for some things it is just too soft. I used it for an Oak-based Kitchen spice rack for glass jars, and the finish scratched up somewhat on the shelves where the jars were sliding across them. I re-did this with...

    Finish for beech

AP, I would suggest you give Mission a call - from personal experience on technical matters (replacement parts etc) I've always found them to be the friendliest and most customer-oriented hifi manufacturer around, and I'm sure if you ask them they'll be able to tell you what is the finish (if...

    Workshop Airfilters ?

Greetings, Anybody know any alternative suppliers other than Rutlands and DB Keighley for the Jet AFS1000 for up to £300 ? I really don't want to use Rutlands as they screwed up all 3 of my previous orders and I operate a 3-strikes-and-out policy with suppliers. DB Keighley do have it, but...

    Workshop Airfilters ?

Greetings, I need a new workshop air filter for my new workshop (cellar) in Switzerland*. This is about the size of 2 double garages, so a big improvement on my single garage in the UK. I just ordered an Axminster (re-badged Jet) AFS1000B online - it was a choice of this or the smaller...

    Erbauer Router ?

Neil, re Scrit's rec' on NuTool cutter set - don't go there. SWMBO bought a set (£25 IIRC) for her green Bosch, and they were an absolute abomination - utterly the worst cutters I've ever seen. Even the freebies that D&M Tools give away free with new routers are way better then these. Regards...

    Sudden Oak Death

Greetings, Further worrying coverage at: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh ... xhome.html With our denser woodlands the chances of it spreading would appear to be much worse. I read about this SOD last year and how it was affecting the USA - was expecting to see white Oak prices go up...

    E-Mail big wait - help

Noely, If you're unsure about using telnet, a better mechanism is usually to login to the webmail interface that most ISPs provide, delete that monster email (if present), then download as usual. However if it is a big email, it really should not cause a timeout in the email application itself...

    Clearance and Pilot Holes

Neil, Careful with the smaller sizes listed: Jester posted this link on UKWW a year or more ago and I used the quoted sizes for brass #4 (IIRC) into Oak - way too small and I had a few shear off even when being ultra careful. Regards. PitBull.

    Which Planer/Thicknesser - DeWalt 733S or Kity 1637?

CYC, Assuming it's currently in planer mode and you want to thickness... You slide back the blade guard, release the locking handles (one each side), remove the planer outfeed table, flip the dust collector up onto the top of the blade area, wind down the thicknessing table a little to release...

    "Fox" woodturning lathe

Since nobody else stocks that range nor has ever heard of it before, I strongly suspect it has been re-badged specially for Rutlands by one of the cheapo chinese or taiwanese manufacturers - much like some of Axminster's gear is. It may be okay, it may be crap ! Since I applied my...

    Which Planer/Thicknesser - DeWalt 733S or Kity 1637?

CYV, I have the EB HC260 - it's the cheaper version with the open legs rather than the enclosed cabinet (IIRC that makes it a "K" rather than an "M"). It's a pretty good machine in most respects, but had I got a little more money at the time I would have bought the Scheppach due to it having...

    American Oak

Neil, I have found American White Oak (forget Read Oak for furniture) to be 20% or more cheaper than English Oak. In general I find AWO good to work with, but I do notice that edges tend to be somewhat brittle, so you really have to knock of the arrisses. You might also want to look at...

    Drill/Driver

Neil, The Newbury/Berkshire County Show is on this weekend - both Newbury Power Tools (DeWalt specialists) and Aldermaston Power Tools (all makes) will be there, and in the past I've bought quite a few bits of Makita kits from the Aldermaston guys at cheaper prices than anywhere else - they...

    Routers. Which 1/2" model?

The CMT is indeed a an exact clone of the DeWalt DW625 in all respect except the colour and price - CMT is orange, not yellow, and about £50 or so cheaper. I've got the DeWalt - it's a good router and I would happily buy another one as I'm fed up swapping between hand and table use. I would...
