    Anyone got a spare gearbox?

I think it was a Renault Master that my neighbour had huge problems getting into gear a while ago - turned out to be the mounting for the control cable that links the box to the lever - a simple fix for me and my welder... You never know.....

    Building a spray booth

Indeed a great idea for a quick temporary paint shop - perhaps if not tall enough then a temporary scaffolding plank base to raise it a bit. You could always use it to grow stuff afterwards....

    brass flat bar

Metals4u.co.UK have 1/2" by 1/8" available. They have always been a reliable supplier for me.

    Odd Loft Joists

That was the conclusion I came to thinking about it overnight. Someone somewhere has a nice barrel shaped ceiling and these were the offcuts which were too useful to just burn. We all have piles of bits that will come in handy someday....

    Odd Loft Joists

I was in the attic of an old Edwardian house today. This was just a small apex over the attic rooms but it had something I have never seen before. The ceiling joists of the attic rooms were curved on the top edge - they were maybe 2" tall at each end and 6" in the middle with a nice curve along...

Buying Timber in the North East

Robert Duncan in Felling is good for being able to go out the back and choose your boards. They don't seem to mind shifting pallet loads to get at the one small plank I need.... For smaller cabinet grade unusual stuff you could try Arbor Timber in Durham - it looks like a small builders...

    Scarf Joint, oh yes indeedy

Loving your posts so far - please keep them coming. Richard has explained how to get your cuts lined up down the edge but if you want to see this in action have a look at Chris Schwarz in this Woodwrights Shop video - http://video.pbs.org/video/2172739971/ He explains it very well as following...

Taking a Falcon on a Plane

Is it just me who misread the bit about " falcons and guide dogs to lead the blind"? I know Falcons have good eyesight but I'm not sure I would trust one to lead me down to the shops......

    Kitchens

Our present Ikea kitchen is 14 years old and I can't see any reason for changing it. The units are very solid and the price was reasonable. The only slight thing with fitting them is they don't have a space behind the units for pipe runs (or at least didn't 14 years ago!) so plumbing etc. has to...

    2mm constructional veneer

Robbins Timber in Bristol do constructional veneers for boatbuilding - a wider range at 1.5mm but a few are 2.5 to 3mm thickness. They will supply small quantities and mail order is very good from them. http://www.robbins.co.uk/pdf/Marine_Pricelist.pdf

A bit of fun - Karts finished!

Would it not be better to have the steering pivot point in front of the axle? I would have thought that it would make the steering less twitchy.... But I may well be wrong!

    resiliant watches?

Last weekend we were sitting around the bar comparing watches. A friend wearing a G shock watch said that he had one because as an RNLI inshore lifeboat crew he needed an unbreakable watch. He then demonstrated its toughness by taking it off and banging it on the bar. We all laughed when the...

    Maple/B.walnut & Br.mahogany

They look really nice - well done. Just a quick thought though - in a previous job I had to ship lots of stuff to Australia and know they have very strict rules on importing timber products. We had to go to great lengths to avoid where possible or use only certified heat treated timber even as...

    worksharp 3000 buying advice

Theres the thing Aled - mine is plugged in and waiting in the corner of my shop ready to be used. I find it faster to flick a switch and have a honed chisel in a few seconds. I have used scary sharp in the past, moving on to freehand with oil stones. The WS 3000 I find to be quicker and easier...

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

1:- Hobbyweld - http://www.hobbyweld.co.uk/ 2 :- I have not got one in front of me but yes - the regulator should open the bottle valve. I seem to remember the pin was part of the bottle valve and the regulator screwed down on it to push it open. I can have a look if I get to my shop tomorrow 3...

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

This was one of the last batches of vets trolleys put together with the little Clarke and disposable bottles - I would have used less than 3 bottles on this lot which is probably less than the monthly rental costs without gas of a commercial bottle. Mind you my present welder would do this lot...

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

A line of Vets equipment that I built prototypes for for a mate has taken over most of my workshop time as sales have taken off. The majority were welded up with one of the Clarke Turbo 135 welders which seemed to take everything I could throw at it, running all day welding 5mm plate. If I had...

    Driving standards

On a level road like the M11 if another truck is overtaking mine with a minimal speed difference then I tend to lift my right foot for a few seconds. It doesn't make any difference to my journey time but makes everyone elses life a little bit less stressed. However I must admit not many other...
