    Speaker enclosure

@paulrbarnard It is a Bose Marine 131 and the manual says to drill a hole in the case of the speaker itself to let water drain, so you may have hit the nail on the head. I'm still not sure how to fit the base to make it look good and be removable.

    Speaker enclosure

I've been asked to make a speaker enclosure for use on the deck of a boat. The enclosure is about the size of a shoe box (size 10) and the speaker is a marine specific type. I'm making it from teak. Ideally, it'll be a) watertight b) have a removable base (or top). I'm going to construct it with...

    Which Noise cancelling ear defenders?

Ear defenders are best for harmful noise. They're what's used near aircraft. They also don't need charging up! Noise cancelling devices have a microphone that "hears" the ambient noise and circuitry that cancels it which uses power. I have BOSE headphones for general use (they are particularly...

Hard finish for pestle and mortar

I also make olive wood P&Ms. I use melamine for the pestle and Tung oil for the inside of the mortar. Being an oil it’ll soak in before it cures.

    Fed up sharpening pencils

I use Zebra Delguard mechanical pencils. They have a spring in the mechanism which means far less breakages than a standard Pentel one. you can get metal barrel ones, which feel nice to use, but for the workshop the plastic barrel ones are good eBay Zebra Delguard

    Wood "splashback"

The boss would like me to make a wooden "splashback" for our utility room, for the space between the cabinets and the worktop. I'm not sure what the best method of construction is, given wood movement etc. It won't get wet where it is. The wood will be olive wood, in some form of staves (or even...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Paul, The drawing is basically a copy of a chair I've made a few years ago. Never had any unnecessary chaffing so far!

    Firewood to dish thing

No, the stuff I get is from the south of Italy and they don't have any disease at the place I get it from. I've been importing for a few years now. It's basically when they "coppice" the trees to encourage new growth of olives, so sustainable.

    Firewood to dish thing

I sold some olive (I import Italian olive to the UK) to Chris Fisher, AKA the Blind Woodturner. The first thing he remarked on when he open the box was the smell! It does make the unit smell good!
