What to look for buying a used wooden plane?

On planes, just take a punt. We're lucky that there's plenty out there. Having a well used one can be quite informative, even if you don't use it. The patination shows where the hands were placed. Just look for something in reasonable condition. Make the sole flat, make sure the cap iron is...

    Reamer for chair sockets etc

I don't have much experience with this Jacob. I settled on round tenons. From what I can gather this was the approach on Vernacular work. I tried round tennons with a rounder first. It was okay. Next time will be on the lathe.

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

I'm not an expert turner. When I had instruction last year I enjoyed using the Crown Cryo she had. I bought Crown 5 Piece Cryo Woodturning Tool Set as an addition to a lot of various cast steel skews. There is a set of those Cryos as linked on eBay for just over £200.

Chris Schwarz ripping wood by hand - speed

Pinus Strobos 400 kgm3. An excellent choice for demonstrations due to it very easy working. Having worked with it I can concur that no tricks are needed. It's just easy working wood. For many jobs that's a huge advantage. Our "Scott's Pine" is 550 kgm3. Euro Oak is about 720 kgm3

    Froe

Rather you than me! I don't think I'd get a musical instrument working well. It does go against the grain to waste good stuff. But if we're not careful we drown in all the bits a pieces that have potential. Nothing wrong with keeping warm. I'm trying to use up my "that'll come for something...

    Froe

I don't think there's much controversy Jacob. It's your froe, you may use it how you like. It sounds as if you have the perfect solution for you and your basement firewood store. Good to know you're warming yourself twice!

    Grrrrr...Milwaukee, what a con.

Which Mafell were you looking at Adam? What's the difference in cost between the Milwaukee version and the Mafell version?

    Oilstones advice

Glad it's working out! Use as much of the stone as possible with consistent pressure. Doing so will greatly reduce the need for flattening. Avoid any process that feels like you're diging a pit. Hone narrow edges at the end of the stone.

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Pabs, keep asking questions 👍. You might get a lot of varied answers but there's normally something helpful posted.

    Rounding off Plane Iron Corners

Thanks for linking the video. Apologies for anyone who watched it 😂. It was posted in the hope that it might tease a few that haven't experimented to give it a try. But, you don't need to. I just find it odd that people say things like a cap iron only stiffens the blade etc.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

David Weaver (DW) posted his issue with an LN No 8 he purchased. Concave in the length but within tolerance. But not good enough for his work. This aligns with Tony's comments. You have to learn how to use tools. Even the "best" can sometimes require us to refine them. This is why it's wise...

    Metabo BAS 317 Replacement Tire

Hi Tom Niall's tyre does look bad. Not had to swap tyres on a bandsaw before but the advice seems good. My Record DMB 65 might deal with 6" at a push. It's a pretty robust machine but does have lightweight wheels. The going rate seems to be £100, which is what I paid. The Record is currently...

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

If you want your 5 1/2 extra heavy get the Clifton. Heavy, get the Lie-Nielsen Best overall, a good vintage Bailey.

Advice please - cleaning the inside angles of joints

Inside edges to be cleaned up before assembly. Planing or sanding after the event is not ideal. Avoid buying a specialist tool. A damp rag and a chisel kept for cleaning off wet glue should help you in the future.
