Metal 3 jaw chucks will pinch the wood at three points, digging into the wood and regardless of how tight you do it up the wood is not secure. Metal being much harder to compress can be gripped securely this way. If you look at woodturning chuck jaws in more detail, you can see they grip the...

    Newbie mistake.

Amazing that they are close enough for it to thread on! I would suggest getting the correct thread, saves the cost of the adapter and prevents using up space behind the chuck. 3/4 x 16tpi is a very common one.

    Identify unusual electric motors...

I can test the 3 phase one, cant think of any sensible way to test the DC one, let me know if anyone is interested in these, I have no use for them.

    Newbie mistake.

Obviously do not run the lathe until you are convinced it is safe. If you know a local engineering shop they should be able to confirm whether it will stay on there or not. Hopefully you have everything you need to get it going! Have you got any suitable bits of wood yet?

    Union Graduate Power Consumption

Union graduate is a 4 pole motor (1400rpm approx). I dont think the vfd is bothered by the number of poles.

    Newbie mistake.

My personal experience has been that the chuck can feel quite loose on the thread until it has bottomed out against the end. Does it appear to run true once attached?

    Newbie mistake.

Hello kirso, welcome! You said that the chuck does thread onto the lathe, but feels incorrect? If this is the case then I dont believe that the thread can be an M33 as that is approx 1.3 inches in diameter, it would not fit at all onto your lathe with 3/4" diameter thread... so the adapter...

    Identify unusual electric motors...

Inside it has a pair of brushes and a commutator on the spindle. You can also see the equals sign on the motor plate. I am unable to test it without a DC supply high enough, I wonder if it would turn at 12V from a car battery?

    Advice for beginner

What about a segmented solution? You build up your shape in layers of trapezoid shaped wood, turning the inside and outside shape to size at each step. Here is an example of a (much larger) segmented vase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V31MBxVXosQ I have done similar ones with only 7 or so...

    Identify unusual electric motors...

I am having a tidy out and came across two unusual electric motors. One appears to be a DC motor: Any ideas as to the original application? For the DC motor I was guessing some kind of power feed for a mill table or the like.

    Union Graduate Power Consumption

I am using the Yaskawa j1000 model cimr-jcba0006baa which has a limit of 1.1kW. My motor states 2.2amps at 220V and 1.25amps at 380/440V, and is a 3/4HP unit. I believe you wire the motor connections slightly differently if using the higher voltage. General advice I have read is to have the...

    Union Graduate thread covers

I might try to hacksaw the thread very slightly to create a ring and attach a circlip of some kind. Hopefully this will stop the clip from unthreading with use. Another idea would be to swap the screws out altogether and use some strong magnets, might make using the covers alot easier! :D

    Union Graduate thread covers

Thanks Ian, it looks like someone has drilled through mine and removed the thread from the cap, so I can't set it up the original way any more.

Advice on what lathe to replace my old Coronet

Regarding the Union Graduate lathes. I bought one about 6 months ago to replace a Scheppach DMT450 (rebranded under many different names) which is a smallish bench lathe. First thing is the Graduate is often overpriced compared to similar lathes from other brands, and this seems to apply to the...

    Lathe help and ID :)

If the goal is just to create something useable, then I agree this lathe is not the best starting point.. If you do make a benchtop lathe, my advice is to either bolt it to your table, or at least bolt it to a substantial piece of wood, much more enjoyable to use a machine that is not rocking...

    Union Graduate thread covers

Hello all, I have been woodturning for about 2 years, I upgraded to a Union Graduate lathe about 6 months ago from a benchtop mounted lathe. I have bought these two covers for the headstock threads, however the screw with a knurled handle is missing from both of them. I have find that a length...

    Lathe help and ID :)

That is a curious lathe! If the motor works then for £15 I guess you got a good deal. Does the main bar have a groove/recess along its length? Usually with would be used to keep the tailstock from rotating. Does the toolrest freely rotate as well? If you are interesting in making it into a...
