    Motor for a Myford ML8

I have a ML8 and it exhibited motor troubles last year. The start button was the culprit and it was easily replaced with a new unit. A year on and the motor now seems to have run out of steam. When I am rough turning wet logs it is common for the log to stop (jammed on the roughing gouge). I...

    Refinishing mahogany table top

Many thanks, all. I agree that the shellac is likely to be the most true to the original but I'm unused to it. I have some shellac flakes in a plastic bag that I've never opened. I may well try it out on the inside of the drawer front to see how easy it is and what sort of appearance it gives. I...

    Refinishing mahogany table top

My wife bought a gate leg mahogany table at auction with wood hinges for the folding out rear legs. The 'outside' top and the surfaces of the opened out table had a high polish but there was a lot of water damage around the edges and a couple of big blooms into the surface finish. I decided...

    Identifying tools

I can confirm that the one on the right is a Henry Taylor micro turning tool. I have a set of them and if you have adequate eyesight, they're great. Good luck! Steve

    Sanding inside hollow forms

Just remember that when using forceps you should hold the outside rather than insert your fingers in the holes of the handle. If - heaven forbid - the abrasive were to catch, fingers in holes become pretzels very quickly.

Myford ML8 table saw attachment? What diameter blade???

I hope the images below help you: Good luck, Steve

    Latest Project

You should read "The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees" by Robert Penn. It apparently was serialised on BBC Radio 4. Essentially he cuts down an Ash tree and tries to make lots of different things from it explaining history of the items and design/manufacturing processes. One item is a baseball...

Myford ML8 removing pulleys from shaft.

When you say you want an original starter, do you mean one of these? I removed it from my (inherited) ML8 because it needs quite particular manipulation of the green button to get the inner workings to latch and run. I'm not patient enough to refurb it so I replaced it with something shiny...

    Cheaper Steb Centres Now?

Although I love a bargain, the Chronos range is far from complete. I want a 1" 1MT and they only do half inch at present. I may drop into their shop and look at the sets. It looks like there are drive and live centre stalks which you attach a head to and there are three sizes of four-prong and...

Danish oil finishing error - advice sought

Many thanks all. The oil had been left ages before I tried the MC wax, so I'm certain it was rock hard. The difference in direction of the smears is why I don't think there's any real depth to it. Also why I think the surface was OK before the final coat of Danish oil. The next time I opened...

Danish oil finishing error - advice sought

Hi all I turned a piece of burr elm with the lumpy bark side left lumpy. The cut faces were sanded through the grits to 600 and I added four coats of Danish oil. The oil application was: wipe on generously, wipe off all excess after a minute or two, leave for two or more days, cut back gently...

Rescuing remainder of Danish Oil tin

I have a one litre tin of Rustins Danish Oil that I'm slowly getting through - it's taken six months so far to use half of it. There are now waxy stalactites hanging from the inside of the lid and morphic lumps of solids growing on the inside of the tin. The oil itself is much less runny when I...

    Shops listing?

Hi Bigbud. I don't know if the quest42 link was your own page, but if so you my want to remove ATS Timber Services and probably John Boddy (owned by ATS). I bidded in the liquidation auction of ATS Timber Service's stock. During the viewing period somebody stole all the woodturning tools that...

How Does One Mend a Bowl?

I did a similar ****oo on a small kingwood bowl. I squared the edge of the hole and turned a contrasting piece with a flared foot and a spigot on top that tightly fitted the squared, offending hole. This gave a bowl with a flared foot. I then mounted the flared foot in the chuck and returned to...

Grub screw for locking insert into place in Supernova chuck

Good to hear that it's actually a 6mm (presumably an M6). My Supernova came with the grub screw but after a month or two it worked its way loose and disappeared into the wood shavings, never to be seen again. I shall now fetch a bag of spares as recommended. Cheers Steve

How was this made do you think?

My best guess is mask off the bottom and stain the top and inside blue. I'd agree with Dalboy that the grain implies it's all one piece. Steve

Powder / Gem / Mineral Inlays?

I got some brass powder from eBay which was quite fine. I carefully loaded it into some cracks inside an oak bowl I'd made and dripped thin CA glue onto the surface of each mound. The glue formed a ball that rolled off the powder and soaked into the wood before eventually soaking into the...

    Nova chuck screws

Although they have a very good range and are available through Amazon - very convenient - I ordered some of the relevant screws (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DY2A2F4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00) but they sent the wrong ones to me (knurled cheese head). When I...

Request for welding help in Cheshunt

Isn't it basically an epoxy adhesive like Araldite? Have you used it successfully for steel to steel bonds under moderate stress? I'm intrigued. Thanks Steve

Request for welding help in Cheshunt

I am trying to make a part of a jig for my bench grinder to help me sharpen my woodturning tools. This would involve welding two bits of flat bar to a short length of square tube. I don't have a welder and I wondered if there is a welding fanatic in my area (Cheshunt, Hertfordshire) who could...
