    splits in Elm

Pete If you seal around the area you are filling with sanding sealer it prevents the Superglue staining the wood.

    spalting

Hi Paul I'd agree with Chris, the timber certainly looks like sycamore with that characteristic brown streak across it. Sycamore also developes green specks as it starts to weather. These then turn very quickly into a greyish colour making the timber look rather dirty. If you turn it whilst the...

    Lathe problem

Pete Do you mean the screw in the kip/bristol locking handle or the threaded part that is in contact with the tool rest stem

    finish for black palmira

I'd agree with that but it's also not easy to become "known". It doesn't happen over night. It takes a lot of time marketing and promoting yourself and your work. Some of the names in that exhibition have been around for a long time. Our own Mike Scott from Anglesey has been turning...

    finish for black palmira

What you've got to realise with the prices is that they are the gallery's retail prices and the maker doesn't receive that amount. Galleries can take around 50% in commission (some take more, some less). On top of that you're looking at US $ prices and with the exchange rate as it is they are...

Dean Nice work. I'd say they are all sycamore.

    Tool rest size

Hi Reg I'd agree with Tam's suggestion though I tend to use 10mm flat. Just check out your Thomson Local or Yellow Pages for frabricators. I've always found them most helpful. They probably have the steel sections lying around as offcuts.

My BITS and BOBS (to be continued)

Tam 2 very nice pieces. The goblet certainly flows but I'm not too sure about the padauk neck on the hollow form.

Just another way to extend the Chuck Jaws

Paul Yes that's exactly it - like a jam chuck with tailstock support. The problem with a jam chuck is that you can damage the rim of the bowl. With the method I described the groove is there just to help centre the bowl. Without the tailstock the bowl won't stay in place. Hope that's a bit clearer

Just another way to extend the Chuck Jaws

For those on a budget a simpler way of achieving the same is to reverse turn between centres with a friction drive. 1. Attach a disc to the headstock with a faceplate, screw chuck or chuck jaws - I use offcuts of various sheet material such as MDF 2. Turn a groove in the disc to centre the bowl...

    CRITIQUE - Walnut Vase

Nick A nice piece with nice lines to the curves and I like the finish. As it's a decorative vase (I'm presuming you don't intend to fill it with water and flowers  ) you could maybe have used a narrower base - this can give a more elegant line to the form. Regarding the base a trick I...

    Grinding wheel

Reg Most turning tools nowadays are made from High Speed Steel (HSS) and are usually sharpened on white grinding wheels. The general rule when grinding is the harden the material the softer the stone. There are also ruby/pink coloured stones and blue ones which are also for HSS. These are...

Lathe For Sale (now with photos)

I've finally decided I've got to sell my Coronet No3 to clear some space in the workshop. It's the 36" between centres model complete with the end turning bowl unit with it's own banjo and cam locking banjo on the bed. The purpose made bench is included as well. 3/4 HP motor fitted with a...

    Skew Chisel

I was given a tool like this a few years ago and assumed it was a carving tool (being a turner myself and never having seen a turning tool like it). I use it to remove loose bark from a log mounted between centres prior to starting the lathe. Probably not what it was intended for but I've found...

    Henry Taylor HS1 ???

The HS1 is a 1/2 inch deep fluted bowl gouge. The flute is a more V shape rather than the U profile you find on most standard bowl gouges and it is this that distinguishes it as a Henry Taylor Superflute (I believe the flute profile was patented by Henry Taylor). Regarding the bevel angle I...
