    First attempt

Well done Amy. That's a wonderful piece. =D> =D> You could check out the AWGB web site http://www.woodturners.co.uk/. They are offering course for youngsters to introduce and encourage them to take up turning. I think they charge something like £10 for a weekend course

    Cabinet scrapers

Just to clarify always use the cabinet scraper trailing on the work relative to the rotation at about 30 to 45 degrees. I must stress this as I demonstrated this technique a number of years ago at a club and later learnt that someone had tried it inside a bowl but didn't trail it. The scraper...

    Westonbirt

Dave & Paul... Glad to have been of some help. Just about recovered now but still haven't got the lathes out of the car and back into the workshop  It was great to put some faces to names from here but please forgive me if I see you in the future and can't remember

    How to sell your work?

Pete Selling your work is a hard slog. Most outlets operate sale or return (sor) because of the high costs of running a shop. You have to be wary of outlets which take your work to look good on display but have no hope or intention of selling. Keep a close eye on new outlets you get to ensure...

    Critique required-Piece No1.

Paul You've done well to achieve a 2mm wall thickness and as has already been said the fruit woods aren't the easiest to dry without checks and splits. I'm afraid I'm another who prefers flowing curves rather than straight sides and that is what I now concentrate on in my own work. A flowing...

    critique required, yellowheart box

Hans A nice looking piece. Is the lid threaded or a push fit? There's a pleasing curve in the yellowheart but it seems to flatten a bit as it flows into the ebony lid (this may just be the angle of the photo was taken at?). The trick with the style of finial you've turned is to make the...

    Turning Forum, Item Critiques

Chas Is there a direct link to the List of Critique Threads or does it get lost among the threads within the Wood Turning - Lathes Forum? Could it be put as a 'sticky' at the beginning? (I'm afraid I don't know really how stickies work  ) Critiques are a great way to get constructive...

    New lathe....just dreaming

Chas This can apply to any lathe, direct drive or pulley driven. On one of my earlier 5 speed lathes I had a problem with the motor. Rather than use the lathe manufacturer I tried to get a replacement off the shelf only to find that it was a non standard motor or rather it was a standard motor...

    New lathe....just dreaming

I've used this lathe a number of times and was very impressed with it. The earlier models had a few problems with the software used but they have all been resolved. I heard recently that Sorby have lost the UK dealership to Record and that the lathe is going to be manufactured in Asia somewhere...

    New lathe....just dreaming

I'm afraid I don't remember the moter sizes. Just remember on the one lathe I caught hold of the chuck with both hands and stopped the lathe. At the time I put it down to the set up of the inverter. There can be up to 100 different parameters in these box of tricks and the factory settings...

    Finish on green oak

I've never done it myself but a friend who works a lot in green oak adds spirit dye to the danish oil to create a darker finish.

    New lathe....just dreaming

Of the two you mention I'd go with the Vicmarc. I've used a number of Wivamac lathes at various clubs whilst demonstrating and have found that I can easily stall/slow the motor with heavy cuts. I don't know why this should be. When it first occured I thought it was that particular lathe's set up...

    K10 chuck is stuck

In future use a leather/fibre washer to prevent this happening. I just make up leather washers from old work boots - double sided tape to hold on a scrap disc of wood on the lathe and cut with a skew.

    Electric Chainsaw?

Hi Paul I've had an electric Stihl (E180 I think) for a number of years and it's been great. Admittedly it's more expensive than the cheaper imports but it's been worth it. I would certainly recommend them. On a point of safety note that the chain on an electric chainsaw cannot be pulled round...

    AWGB 11th International Seminar

Hi Dave It was good to meet you and put a face to the name. Regarding the cost of the Seminar it does appear a lot at first glance. But for the price you will get to see at least 22 diiferent presentations (programme allowing) over the weekend. Many if not all of the international turners you...

Have I been "Tangoed"? - Orange broadband problems

Tony I've had similar problems with Orange in the past. In my case they connected the broadband to the wrong phone line ( we have 2 lines one for business and one for the home, they connected to the home line which we don't use for internet connection). The other issue was a problem because a...
