    As Jake has pointed out. If a hole is drilled through the center of depth of the timber joists and this hole diameter is limited to 25% of the beam depth then the reduction of joist bending strength is limited to 2.5%.

    The image suggests a mould. First test for a remedy would be white vinegar sprayed on to contaminated surface. Start with a 1 to 1 dilution of white vinegar and warm water.

    The difference between UNC and BSW threads is that the thread angle of a UNC thread is 60 degrees and a BSW thread angle is 55 degrees. If your thread gauge fits perfectly then it looks like you have a Whitworth thread.
