I would like a new workshop

This is a realy good topic and something that effects us all. I agree you can never have a big enough workshop but... how do the Japanese craftsmen do it? I mean they have just a few square feet in which to work. I read an idea for a simple trolley in a book by Mr Ingham yesterday which I reckon...

    Thin-kerf bandsaw blades

Just ordered one from the ever helpful Ian at Tuff saws. Thanks for drawing my attention to these saws Douglas. Gerard

    Dissolving hardened PVA glue

The dovetails are nice and tight but they are not pushed completely home so only stuck in one direction. So that is part of the reason for it being out of square. Serves me right for trying to do a glue up late at night just before leaving the workshop. Although because I made such a...

    Thin-kerf bandsaw blades

What a brilliant post Douglas. I have the half inch M42 3 tpi blade on my little Inca bandsaw and it cuts through absolutely anything up to 6 inches depth (max for the saw). But it does not leave a smooth finish. So I am tempted to try this blade especially on the more expensive types of timber...

    Dissolving hardened PVA glue

Rushing to glue up a box I did not spot it was clamped slightly out of square. #-o It is only a bit out of square but it is going to mess up the interior if I leave it like that. With the hours I spent trimming the dovetails to fit I cannot believe I messed up this part. So I got thinking is...

    Drum Sander envy

If you follow the instructions to the letter (in the plans)about the size of the pulley wheels in ratio to the speed of the motor it should run at the correct speed to be both effective and not tear up your abrasive. Someone told me that regulating the speed electronically rather than with...

    Brass Screws

I was under the impression that Ryders had been bought by another company and not that they were closing down. It did take a few phone calls to get them to eventually get me a price for postage and send me the screws. Which I did not experience as uncooperative but more as realistic. If they are...

    Brass Screws

I ordered very small brass screws from Ryders of Bury (screwsonline) last year and was very happy with the quality and price. Admittedly you have to by a box of 100 or 200 but they don't rust! And at their prices neither do they break the bank. Gerard

    Drum Sander envy

I have never seen any lathe based drum sanders. But it sounds possible. The variable speed would certainly be an advantage. The way to avoid tapering is to make the table first and fix the drum in place and then sand the drum with sand paper glued to a sheet of mdf which you feed under the drum...

    More new dolls house miniatures

Where do you get those giant ten pen pieces? Seriously nice pieces, it is nice to see someone making minature furniture that is not just a copy of normal size antiques!

    Drum Sander envy

It depends how old the washing machine was. I have understood that the motors for modern washing machines are designed for short running times and so they are not really suitable for a drum sander which runs for extended periods. I am sure there are people on this forum who know more about this...

    Rutlands....argh!!!!

I have had good experience of top service from Axminster, Workshop Heaven and Rutlands. I think that the unfortunate problem here appears to be that with bigger organisations like Axminster and Rutlands if you get the wrong person on the phone when you have an issue with an order you can end up...

    Drum Sander envy

Hello Mark, I followed the instructions and plan on this website. http://www.rockslide.org/drum%20sander.html It tells you a lot but not everything. I just kept digging around until I found someone local who was selling an induction motor cheap. Check out a scrap merchant for the bearings...

    Robbed Today

When you buy your next bike ask about insurance in the bicycle shop. It is about 100 pounds for 3 years on a 500 pound bike in the Netherlands so I am sure it must be less in the UK (as bikes get stolen in the Netherlands at an alarming rate!). It is frustrating that no one seems able to do much...
