    Hydraulic pressure dial replacement?

Apologies for my slightly muddled post earlier. It is not the old gauge that has dual scales, it is the new one that Chris152 posted a picture of. On that (metric) gauge the inner scale is kgf/cm2 and the outer scale is Metric Tons, (American for Tonne) - which are slightly smaller than UK long...

    Hydraulic pressure dial replacement?

You don't need to do any calculations - just copy the ton scale from the old gauge across to the new one using the kgf scale as a reference. Write the numbers with a paint pen or permanent marker, or engrave the casing and fill the engraving with a suitable colour for clarity. Damped gauges are...

    Is this a good chuck

The SC4 is a fine chuck, with a wide range of inserts for future compatibility and with jaws that are compatible with Nova 2 variants and Robert Sorby Patriot as well as one of the Charnwood models (I forget which one). However, the latest Novas are also good chucks at a very good price right...

    Robert Sorby Modular tool rests?

Personally, I can't see the point of modular toolrests, other than that they are usually made of a harder steel than traditional cast iron toolrests. You either have to buy a stem and a cross bar for every size of toolrest or keep swapping the stem between the crossbars. The first option costs...

    Record CL1 tailstock alignment

The clamping plates of the tailstock and headstock are handed and need to be the correct way round. Check that both sets of clamps are the same way round by looking at the aligning pads ,- which are probably the "roughness" that you are seeing.

Any recommendations for light, mains powered angled drill for bowl sanding?

The Makita is a great tool and widely used by professional turners. And by me - not with results like the professionals though:)

    Tailstock support?

Or glue a flat piece of wood across the end and use any of the live centres at your disposal

    Size of Laguna 18bx?

Yes, width is from the back (spine) to the far end of the table. If you imagine yourself standing in the position to feed wood into the blade, it will all become clear as the wood moves through the front, past the blade, to the back. Duncan

    Scheppach Basato 5-2 Bandsaw Electrics

Trying to get a recently purchased Basato 5-2 bandsaw working and would appreciate some lecky advice. I am doing this from a distance so can't immediately do the obvious things, so please bear with me. The bandsaw needs a spin of the wheels in order to start and then runs just fine so the issue...

    Turning Yew

Realistically, turning yew is unlikely to kill you unless you do it for years without protection - and then pretty well any wood can cause serious lung damage, especially if raising fine dust by sanding. However, the wood is an irritant and if you feel any tingling around eyes or mouth or on...

    Deep glossy clear finish

It can also help to hand sand gently along the grain after sanding with the lathe turning. Do this for each of the grits, or at least for the finer grits e.g. 240, 320, 400, 600 Duncan

    Inefficient appliance repair.

When I bought it to replace a VERY old Indesit I saw loads of comments online about Bosch, Electrolux etc complaining about two or three year old machines that had failed (usually bearings) and that couldn't be economically repaired so I decided to look at Miele which does have replaceable...

    Inefficient appliance repair.

The above comments are why I bought an Ebac washing machine. Made in Britain, repairable, 7 year parts and labour guarantee - and human beings you can talk to. Generally, I find that corporates have too many "systems" for dealing with customers which result in inefficiency and expense for the...

    Plane Irons and ProEdge

I occasionally use a ProEdge to sharpen plane irons. It does the job OK and I've never found the width a problem. If you want sharp-sharp you'll have to invest in a Trizact 3000 belt and/or finish off by honing on an oilstone or something like Autosol on a piece of MDF Duncan
